Overview

The Imperial Hotel is perched beside the River Taw in the centre of Barnstaple, north Devon. This "smart and attractive" (The AA) hotel is less than half an hour's drive from the beaches at Saunton Sands, Woolacombe and Croyde. The seaside resort of Ilfracombe, "framed by precipitous cliffs, elegant town houses, golf greens and a promenade" (Lonely Planet), is less than 15 miles away.

The Tarka Trail, a series of footpaths and cycle paths that follow the route taken by the fictional Tarka the Otter in the book of that name, is less than a minute's walk away, and Tapeley Park and Gardens, a historic country estate with a Grade II-listed mansion house, is less than 20 minutes' drive away.

Glassmaker Dartington Crystal, where you can try your hand at glass painting, jewellery making and glass blowing, and Exmoor Zoo, boasting 175 species and over 600 animals, are 25 minutes' drive away.

Braunton Burrows, part of a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve in the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is 30 minutes' drive away.

The coastal village of Porlock, described as "one of the prettiest on the Exmoor coast" (Lonely Planet), is an hour's drive away. The oysters from Porlock Bay were once a sought-after delicacy, supplying many restaurants in London throughout the 1800s.

The hotel's Arlington Restaurant offers fine dining while the smaller Colours Bar Bistro, serves food in a more informal setting.

Recently refurbished, the 63 rooms each have a unique design and come with free Wi-Fi. Some have views of the River Taw.

Cooking, room temperature (too hot), and if we had paid full price it would have been too expensive for what was on offer

Good position and comfortably furnished.
Other Comments
Disappointed our room was not in the main building and although the room was comfortable, it looked out on an internal courtyard, what we think was the kitchen and there was noise from an extract system and we could smell cigarette smoke, it was very hot so we needed our window open.

Standard Brend Hotels experience - reliably good. Note : avoid room No. 126 or thereabouts if you're a light sleeper - noisy generator.

The food was excellent at dinner and also it was a nice change to have breakfast ordered from your table and cooked for you rather than the breakfast buffets you find in so many hotels these days which are invariably cold by the time you get to your table !
Other Comments
We were unlucky in that the Superior room we had treated ourselves to had some issues with the fridge not getting cold and some of the lights not working but the staff did their best to sort things as best they could . I would like to particularly mention the Hotel manager ( unfortunately didn't get his name ) who was such a nice guy , very welcoming to us and all of the other guests and I can't remember ever seeing anyone work so hard in his role , serving in the bar and the next morning assisting as an extra waiter during breakfast etc etc .. Alex Polizzi ( Hotel Inspector ) would of been as impressed as we were . Well done !
