Opened in 1909, The Stanley Hotel is registered as a National Historic Landmark but is best-known for serving as inspiration for Stephen King’s "The Shining." The property is famously haunted by its original owner and his wife; both can be seen in Victorian-era formalwear on the main staircase, and her piano plays on its own. Embracing its supernatural reputation, the hotel offers nightly spirit tours, séances and TVs that play the Jack Nicholson thriller on repeat. In 2015, a replica maze from the film's chase scene was constructed on the grounds.

The Georgian-style hotel overlooks Rocky Mountain National Park and is a five-minute drive from downtown Estes Park’s restaurants and boutiques. Outdoorsy guests will find hiking, fishing, skiing and golfing within a 15-minute drive of the hotel.

Guests have a variety of accommodation options at this hotel; most include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, seating areas and the choice of one king or two queen beds. The main building features traditional rooms as well as upgraded options like rooms with Jacuzzi tubs and views of the Rocky Mountains, suites and “spirited” rooms with reported paranormal activity. The Lodge offers an intimate B&B experience on the storied grounds with dog-friendly rooms that include complimentary breakfast in the daily rate. Built in 2016, the Aspire Residences feature apartment-like condos with kitchens, sofa beds in the living rooms and 360-degree views of the national park.

Dining is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner at Cascades, where guests can eat fireside or dine alfresco in spring and summer. On weekends, Table hosts a rotation of celebrity chefs offering a five-course pre-fixe menu. The property also features a casual coffee shop and a bar boasting the state’s largest whiskey selection. Visitors and locals alike can snag tickets to comedy shows, rock concerts and special speakers at the hotel’s Stanley Live venue.

From the press:
  • "The experience served as the inspiration for 'The Shining,' and this, in tandem with ghost stories galore, makes a stay an absolute must for horror (and King) fans" -- Frommer’s

The location and beauty of the hotel and property!
Other Comments
The front desk took my name and phone number upon arrival for early check-in, saying they would text me in half an hour to get my key. They forgot to contact me, so we waited for over an hour to get into our room. Otherwise the staff was very friendly and courteous! A truly beautiful hotel (and Aspire apartments is where we stayed) with spectacular views, even with construction going on.

Hotel itself was nice but maybe understaffed for the off season.
Other Comments
No air conditioning. Wasn’t advised. Elevator was not working. Wasn’t advised until check in. Apparently based on online comments it hasn’t been working since early April. Travel Zoo bottle of wine wasn’t received until asked. Room wasn’t made up and no fresh towels received for the second day of my stay. Hotel exterior under construction also wasn’t advised.

The location is literally the only benefit but there are tons of places to stay, for less than half the price.
Other Comments
This place is not maintained, it’s not pretty, the elevator was broken so I had to take 5 flights of stairs (not to mention there is only one staircase), there is no AC and my room was 78 degrees in APRIL.

The staff, service, rooms, food, amenities and ambience were everything you would expect from a five star hotel. We stayed in Aspire, which was quiet with a lovely view of the mountains.
