Overview

Situated near the small village of Eversley by the Berkshire-Hampshire border, Warbrook House is a Grade I-listed country mansion that was designed by architect John James in 1724. The property is set within 130 acres of Grade II-listed gardens, and takes its name (Warbrook) from the stream that waters them.

Reading town centre is a 25-minute drive from the hotel or a 50-minute train journey from Fleet station, less than 10 minutes' drive from the hotel. There are also direct trains to London Waterloo from Fleet, that take 40 minutes.

Highclere Castle -- the filming location for "Downton Abbey" in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty -- is 40 minutes' drive away.

Winchester city centre -- home to a medieval cathedral, a 17th-century library and a Norman crypt -- is less than 40 minutes' drive away. The city, which sits on the edge of the South Downs National Park, is also home to the ruins of Winchester Castle, originally built in 1067 for William the Conqueror. The Great Hall is the last surviving part and is now a museum where you can see Henry VIII's legendary Round Table -- an imitation of King Arthur's that is said to date from the early 13th century.

The hotel has a bar for drinks and light meals such as salads and homemade pizzas, while the Canal View Restaurant serves seasonal dishes for lunch and dinner, and overlooks the Versailles-style canal in the gardens.

Mansion House Rooms are situated in the main house and have views of the grounds. Wi-Fi is free.

On arrival we were informed that both the bar, restaurant or main house were not available for use by us. We were informed we could use room service and that there were complimentary coffee machines at our location. However come that evening the machines were not working and were still not working come 10am the next morning. The room given was a VERY small double - this was changed upon highlighting my partner is nearly 6ft 4 and hanging out the bed! Next to our block of accommodation was a skip and a pile of rubbish Overall a real disappointment to what could have been a lovely location- though we only got to see this from the brochures!

There was a wedding going on and I think this may have effected the service we were provided. We weren't able to check in to our room until 4.30 but they did give us a bottle of wine for free which was nice. The hotel is missing a few small touches e.g. a vending machine where you can buy bottles of water/snacks etc as the bar didn't sell anything like this. Breakfast on the Sunday was a little chaotic and running out of things (the room where you get hot food is way too small for large numbers) but again this is probably due to a wedding the previous night, however they should be able to cater for other guests or if they can't don't make any other reservations that weekend. I think we were the only people in the hotel on Sunday so perhaps that's why they left lots of beds and full bin bags in the corridors as they didn't think it mattered. Just didn't look very nice and felt like we were a bit forgotten to be honest.

We had booked in for Valentines but there was no evidence of any valentines day celebration at all, no hearts, no flowers, no romantic music. Very disappointing.

Cooked buffet breakfast should have been hot, not tepid. We should have been advised of cook to order options. On the second day only a cold buffet was provided and we had to ask for the hot menu. We were told this was because there were only 8 expected for breakfast.Given that I did not wish tea or coffee, I should not have been billed for fizzy water. We should not have been hurried out of the breakfast room by staff clearing up. We were well within the breakfast hours, but were clearly the last of the few residents there. and the staff wanted us out.

Next time we would ask for a room with a view as our window overlooked internal roofs! Room was compact but had everything we needed. Decor, towels, bed linen all a very good standard.
