Ferry across the Puget Sound past a chain of smaller islands and you’ll wind up on Orcas Island -- the largest and “the most beautiful” (Frommer's) of the San Juan Islands.

Built in 1904, the charming Victorian-style Orcas Hotel sits atop one of the island’s most enviable locations, right at the island’s doorstep above the ferry landing. Graced with beautiful marina views and only 12 guest rooms, the hotel is the ideal spot to slow things down and take in the beauty of the landscape and stunning shoreline. Each room is decorated with antique furnishings and comes with a unique layout -- some have balconies, Jacuzzi tubs or water views. At the on-site restaurant, Octavia’s Bistro, guests can enjoy Pacific Northwest fare with fresh seafood picks.

The highlight of any trip to Orcas is a visit to Moran State Park and a hike up the tallest peak in the islands, Mount Constitution, for 360-degree views from Seattle to Canada. The park is a 30-minute drive from the hotel, and there’s a full day’s worth of activities once you get there -- 30 miles of hiking trails full of lakes and waterfalls. Other must-do activities on the island include whale watching, biplane rides, kayaking, horseback riding and a visit to the quaint village of Eastsound and its little shops and art galleries.

Close to the ferry and a historic feel in an older building. Dinner was very good.

It is old and needs upgrading and polish. Clarify what you want before choosing this hotel...i.e. tv or no, view, deck dvd, bath in the room (including shower). All rooms are different.

The location was good. The rooms were clean. There was a good variety of breakfast choices. The dinner we had (free with the TravelZoo voucher) was very good! I considered giving the staff/service a neutral, but some were excellent but one in particular was neutral. The gal that checked us in wasn't generous with a smile or pleasantries. We had to make a few trips to the check-in desk over two days, and found we could get a smile out of her if we smiled first. I checked that I would not recommend this hotel, although if I was talking to someone wouldn't mind having no TV or radio, and wouldn't mind looking at things that are in need of repair, I would say to give it a try. We wouldn't go back because we won't be going back to Orcas Island. We boat all summer in the San Juans, but seldom get inland on Orcas, so the trip was to explore the island by car.

The old electric heat registers along the floor were broken (or appeared to be, as they were not against the wall and looked a bit dirty or rusty), in the room and in the cafe. For heat we had a plug-in heater in our room (room 10). We had no TV or radio in the room- very disappointing when we wanted to see the news or listen to music. DVD's were available to watch movies, which we couldn't imagine doing there. The bathroom was a separate split bathroom, which was nice. One room had a toilet and a sink, with a mirror above the sink. Next to it was a room with the shower and a sink, but no mirror. We did not use the shower. The shelf above the sink was broken, and there was a sign to not use the shelf. The water in that sink dripped. We stayed one night instead of the two purchased through TravelZoo. Online information showed the Orcas Hotel has been for sale in the recent past. We do not know if it is currently for sale. It appears that some things have been n

Our room had a large jetted tub, but there was soap film on it to the point I wouldn't use it. No shower in the room, though there was a hose sprayer I could wash my hair with over the side of tub. For the most part we really enjoyed ourselves, the view, and friendly staff.

The restaurant was awesome and was by far the best food on the island! It should be noted that not all rooms have bathrooms included and some have a communal bathroom. For us this was not an issue, but might be for others. We had a great experience.
