Why We Love It

  • The hotel has views of the mountains of Snowdonia National Park, which is a 15-minute drive away
  • Criccieth Beach, which has a Blue Flag, is five minutes' walk away
  • 13th-century Criccieth Castle is a 10-minute walk from the hotel
  • Frommer's describes Criccieth as one of the "best towns on the peninsula", due to its location -- Porthmadog and Portmeirion are within 20 minutes' drive

The 18th-century Lion Hotel Criccieth is on the Llŷn Peninsula, a 5-minute walk from the Blue Flag-awarded Criccieth Beach and 15 minutes' drive from Snowdonia National Park -- you can see the mountains and the sea from the hotel.

Criccieth Castle, which dates back to the 1230s, is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Its ruins are perched on a cliff and offer views along the southern coast of the peninsula and over to Harlech.

Frommer's describes Criccieth as one of the "best towns on the peninsula", due to its location; the harbour town of Porthmadog is a 10-minute drive away and marks the start of the 91-mile Llŷn Coastal Path, which runs around the peninsula to Caernarfon.

Portmeirion, made famous in the TV series "The Prisoner", is 20 minutes away. This Italianate village was designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis.

The bar serves British cuisine made using local produce. Wi-Fi is free.

One sticking point was the shower, didn't work as it should have. Apparently it was known about from a comment by the previous guest, but was not told to us on booking in. Only told about it on our comment to staff. So if it isn't fixed the incoming guests need a heads up otherwise it could cause a problem with not being able to correctly regulate the temp. Otherwise it was a really enjoyable stay.

Ear plugs in the bedroom - a good idea as walls were not very thick! Good thinking!
