Why We Love It

  • This 4-star hotel has an indoor-and-outdoor swimming pool, a sauna and multiple spa treatment rooms

  • The pretty towns of Marlow, Henley-on-Thames and Sonning are less than 20 minutes' drive away

The AA Hotel Guide 2017 describes Fredrick's Hotel, Restaurant & Spa as a "stylish and well-run hotel set in attractive grounds" on the edge of Maidenhead.

The 2-AA-Rosette restaurant serves a classic British menu influenced by modern French cuisine. You can eat in the formal restaurant or outside on the heated terrace. Afternoon tea is served daily (at an extra cost), and make sure to check out the bar with its Gin Pantry -- an eclectic selection of gins from around the world, served on the rocks, with tonic water and fresh raspberries, or neat.

Popular as a weekend retreat beyond the hustle and bustle of London, Fredrick's boasts a spa with an indoor-and-outdoor pool, a steam room, a relaxation area and sun loungers (minimum age to use the spa is 16; minimum age for treatments is 18). You can hop on a train at Paddington railway station and be at the hotel within the hour.

Windsor -- with its royal castle and ancient parkland roamed by deer, and home to Legoland Windsor Resort -- is less than 20 minutes' drive away. You can head to the High Street to watch the Changing of the Guards ceremony on certain days.

Ascot Racecourse and the pretty Thames-side towns of Sonning, Henley and Marlow, are within 20 minutes' drive of the hotel. Reading, known for the 12th-century abbey ruins built by Henry I and its restaurants along the river, is around 25 minutes' drive.

Only 2 negatives:- 1) check in at 3pm and check out 11am, we asked if we could stay longer after checking out as you don't really get enough time to use the spa facilities, which was a real shame for us. But they had a full hotel and didn't have any day tickets available for purchase due to it being full. I would have checked this out in more detail had I known this would be an issue. 2), breakfast was tasty but the tables weren't kept ready for guests so you had to walk around the room collecting clean cutlery and condiments etc.

Nice hotel in good location for visiting Windsor and Eton. Slightly old fashioned and strange public area decore but bedroom and bathroom was modern and very clean. Food was excellent, really very high standard but restaurant slightly let down by service- unprofessional as mainly young staff with no experience which was obvious. Our glasses from the previous night were still out the next morning! Pool nice but not allowed to be used after you check out which is very tight of the hotel.

The bed was very comfortable.

No prosecco as advertised. The room was quite dated and in places shabby - there was wallpaper peeling off the wall in one place. The website advises that 'there are few spas in the United Kingdom to compare with Fredrick’s'. It is, at best, average. The spa menu also advises that there is a jacuzzi, which there is not. Some of the pool tiles are peeling, and my husband cut his toe on one when he left the pool. When he asked for a plaster, he was looked at like it was his fault. Nothing went into the accident log book. The staff are ambivalent, with only one member of staff actually being helpful. On our arrival, we discovered that the television in the room was not working. We asked for this to be fixed, but it had not been so we had to ask again the following day. The breakfast service is rather lackadaisical, again the staff are not particularly helpful. On our first morning we sat down at a table with crumbs all over the floor, and no menu. I could go on.

Wi-fi not available in all areas as suggested. Breakfast surprisingly unexciting with very odd presentation. Bedroom we were given - Berkshire suite - fantastic size and ambiance but bathroom could benefit from being refreshed.
