Overview

The attractions of Marrakesh’s sprawling medina, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, are within walking distance of Les Jardins de la Medina, which offers “spacious accommodation” (Fodor’s) amidst “lush” (Fodor’s) gardens. Set in the Kasbah, the medina’s royal district and “a quiet and authentic neighbourhood with excellent security” (The Daily Telegraph), the hotel is housed in a former aristocratic riad dating to the 19th century with a traditional terracotta façade, a 10-minute walk from the 16th-century Saadian Tombs. Both Jemaa el-Fnaa, the city’s landmark central square, and the “dazzling interiors” (Lonely Planet) of Bahia Palace are about 20 minutes’ walk away, whilst Musée de Marrakech, home to a noted collection of Moroccan art, is a 30-minute walk from the hotel. The Menara Gardens, lined with olive groves, and Jardin Majorelle, famous for its cobalt blue buildings, are approximately 10 minutes from the hotel by taxi.

Les Jardins de la Medina’s interiors have a French colonial-style feel, including a bar where high ceilings, rattan furniture and floor-to-ceiling windows opening to a patio are offset by ornate lamps, colourful artwork and a cosy fireplace. Carved cedar ceilings characterise the restaurant, which “blends Moroccan with international flavours and does so with great flair” (Frommer’s), and “the real star of this hotel is the luxurious garden with its tangle of orange, olive, palm and jacaranda trees” (The Daily Telegraph), where guests can lounge on terraces surrounding the outdoor pool. There’s also a wellness area offering a hammam, a barber’s shop and a range of beauty treatments (fees may apply).

Polished guestrooms take inspiration from traditional Moroccan design and are decorated in neutral tones with dark wood furnishings. All rooms include free Wi-Fi, TVs, mini bars and air-conditioning. Garden-view rooms “open onto a jungle of…trees and are deliciously cool in summer”, whilst higher tariff rooms and suites “open onto private patios and some have sun terraces” (Fodor’s), along with details such as fireplaces and living rooms.
