Map & Directions

If you can fly into Monterey regional airport, it’s easiest to take a taxi to the hotel. The journey only takes 10 minutes, and renting a car is probably more hassle than it’s worth -- parking is expensive and there are numerous one-way streets in the area. The nearest international airports are San Jose (about 80 minutes away) or San Francisco (just under two hours' drive) and the hotel provides both self-parking and valet parking (extra charge).

Overview

On the coast among the wineries and beaches of central California lies the Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay. This child-friendly property is also home to the area’s largest day spa and Monterey's original craft brewery.

The hotel is set on a historic plaza and is within walking distance of the vibrant Fisherman’s Wharf and Monterey Bay Aquarium (ask at the hotel about tickets -- they are the same price as when you buy direct, but are valid for two days instead of one). It's also a good location for business travelers (Monterey Conference Center is just next door), and Santa Cruz and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park are both about an hour's drive for day trips.

Children are welcomed with warm cookies at check-in and automatic membership into the Portola Pirates kids club for ages 3-12. The first stay at the hotel as a Portola Pirate includes a souvenir Portola Pirate Bag and self-guided treasure hunt map for buried treasure.

The hotel does not have air conditioning, but all nautical-style bedrooms have ceiling fans and large windows or patio doors that open to the sound of the ocean (and the occasional seagull or seal). Most rooms overlook the city or the pool courtyard. Upgrade to a Harbor View Room on the fifth or sixth floor for impressive sea views at night. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby or bar, but available for an extra charge in the guest rooms.

On site, Jacks Restaurant & Lounge is a well-known local's restaurant serving cuisine inspired by the California coast. Craft brewery Peter B’s Brewpub is the “downtown hot spot for beers,” says The Huffington Post.

From the press:
  • The hotel "welcomes guests with warm cookies at the front desk, which sets the hospitable tone of the property" -- U.S. News
  • Monterey is "a sanctuary of relaxation and recreation" -- Huffington Post

On a positive note, my room was very clean and well stocked with towels and toiletries. Jack's did not disappoint and the check in cookies are still amazing.

I booked knowing you were under construction. I expected a number of detours, etc. I did NOT realize construction would be taking place during "off" hours (hammering and power tool usage at 2am)! I also expected a romantic weekend with my husband but was assigned a room with two small (double) beds and no bath tub. If this were my first visit, I probably would never return :-(

I thought the voucher that was offered included the breakfast buffet but when it too us directly to the hotel website to book and I received my confirmation, the breakfast was not included. I will not book again unless I know that I am getting what was on the Travelzoo site!

The breakfast at Jack's was delicious. The omelet chef was exceptional and very friendly. The restaurant staff was also excellent.

When I booked my reservations they said the lobby area by the convention center was under construction, but it was the entire lobby. Different were blocked off on different days so you had to take alternative routes each day. It was totally confusing and inconvenient. If I had known it was going to be that bad I would have stayed elsewhere. It is normally worth the money, but not in the condition it was in this time. I would only recommend it after construction is complete.

Good location, restaurant was also very good. Very close to fishermans wharf, walking distance. In the heart of historical area...pity nothing open for historical tours to see (only Friday to Sunday). Disappointing. Obviously off season.
Other Comments
Not air conditioned. Good idea with fans but too noisy to open patio door. Right next to road, downtown traffic, sirens etc. Would be likely uncomfortable in summer. Hotel under construction but did not cause an issue.
