First welcoming guests in the spring of 2013, Nizuc Resort and Spa has twenty-nine acres of sheltered mangrove forests and secluded beaches face the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, a world away from the tourist-centric Hotel Zone directly north of the resort.

Thirteen room categories range from suites with plunge pools facing the ocean to villas stretching over 5000 square feet to include rooftop sundecks and enclosed tropical gardens with infinity pools. All accommodations feature mid-century-modern-meets-beach-chic décor, stone floors, Nespresso machines, rainfall showers and furniture carved from sustainable tropical woods. A section of suites is reserved for adults, a perfect fit for honeymooners, while larger rooms can sleep four guests and are ideal for families.

Two private beaches feature snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding and rows of lounge chairs with cocktail and food service. Guests can also swim in the three large infinity pools, take a oceanfront yoga class or spend a few hours relaxing at the ESPA spa while children are entertained at the on-site kids club. Those looking to explore beyond the property line can book guided tours of the Mayan ruins, yacht excursions or Zayak, a unique way to view aquatic life with a special sea sled.

Home to six restaurants, the property offers diners diverse choices ranging from contemporary Mexican to a modern steakhouse. As the sun sets each evening, a live Cuban jazz band performs, and guests are treated to cocktails and cigars hand-rolled on the premises.

Great staff - lovely spa.

We had coconut palm trees outside our room and asked about getting one for the coconut water - but when they picked them, they took them elsewhere and we didn’t get one. It’s just a little thing but would have been lovely to try.

Nizuc is amazing - highly recommend with a small asterisk, I did get a case of the runs so even at a 5 star resort you need to remember it is Mexico. That said, without an exception, every single staff member was beyond courteous, friendly and happy to be of service. Rooms are beautiful and breakfast choices diverse and comprehensive and delicious AND open until noon!!!! I think Nizuc could use a more casual, lower priced restaurant but that isn't a deal breaker. Literally did not leave the resort it was that wonderful - even has a small but super vibrant reef to snorkel and we saw rays, a small octopus and lots of healthy coral and fish. Travelzoo is good but not great. Our flights were not great. 4:30 a.m. arrival to Cancun is not ideal. Flight home would have been better (8:30 a.m. a bit early but doable) if it had been on-time but it was 5.5 hours delayed due to plane needing a part. That I won't pin on Travelzoo. Also, we were not allowed to bring a carry-on bag on the way home (United) so had to pay an extra US$65 to check. Hidden fee for sure. Just beware.

It is a beautiful resort and worth the trip (although it is expensive). The gym and morning training sessions with Patricia are a great value. I was able to get up in the morning and have coffee looking out at ocean and then attend a well organized training program such as spin classes.
