Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant is an 18th-century former farmhouse in the village of Wark, which is bounded by the River North Tyne and is 10 minutes' drive from Chesters Roman Fort, a well-preserved cavalry fort that's part of Hadrian's Wall.

Northumberland has the darkest skies in England, so the hotel's observatory is a great place to stargaze (supplements apply). Northumberland National Park, "England's last great wilderness... 405 square miles of natural wonderland" (Lonely Planet), is also a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Hexham Abbey and Vindolanda -- an excavated Roman village with bath-house ruins -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away. You can also drive 90 minutes to the coast to visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, or watch the sun set behind Bamburgh Castle.

The property has impressive eco-friendly credentials. It won the AA Eco Hotel of the Year Award 2016-17, the Sustainable Tourism Award in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2017, the Sustainable Business Award in the 2019 Catey Awards, and boasts a Green Tourism Gold award, too. Seasonal ingredients are grown in the kitchen gardens, and the bar serves Fairtrade wines and ales from local microbreweries.

We've also negotiated a tasting-menu meal for two, for £39.

Dogs can stay in some rooms for an extra £10 per night (payable direct to the hotel).

Ask reception for a leaflet of local walks.

The hotel is in a Dark Skies area and unfortunatly it was cloudy and wet during our say. We would have loved to have visited their observatory. We may have to visit again.

Visited with friends. Very happy with our accommodation. Food was excellent & both food & drink reasonably priced. Went mainly for the stargazing but unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind to us but then no one can control that & at least we had a very pleasant hotel to spend our time in when we weren’t out & about enjoying the sights of Northumberland.

Nothing but good to say! We stayed in a lodge room, which was lovely, with comfortable beds and a huge, cosy bathroom. The staff are all very efficient and friendly and the food was delicious, especially the 8 course tasting menu. This is the second time we've stayed here, hoping to see the dark skies, but both times it has been cloudy.....so we'll just have to go again!

The added benefit of staying here for me is the Pure Lakes toiletries. Having very sensitive skin, I can't usually use toiletries in hotels but at Battlesteads I did and my skin was happy!

We had a wonderful stay in this lovely hotel. The room was clean and had everything that we needed, including tea and coffee making facilities. The staff were warm and friendly. The taster menu on the first was delicious and extremely well cooked. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Well situated to visit many sites including, Zhou’s tears Fort and the part of Hadrian’s Wall which you can walk on. Hexham is a quaint town nearby, check at the hotel they may have a free parking disc for Hexham (if not it is only £1.00 to buy one from any shop).
