Overview

Barns Hotel has a "tranquil location on the outskirts of Bedford" (The AA) with views of the River Great Ouse.

Local attractions include Woburn Abbey, a Grade I-listed country house surrounded by historic landscaped gardens and a deer park, and Woburn Safari Park, a wildlife park with over 1000 animals and both road and foot safaris. Both are 25 minutes' drive away.

Bletchley Park, the headquarters of the British codebreakers during World War II, and the site where Alan Turing helped decipher the Enigma Code, is 30 minutes' drive away. Grade I-listed Houghton House, a ruined mansion house with views of the surrounding hunting park and gardens, is less than 20 minutes' drive away.

The hotel's river-facing WineGlass Restaurant features rustic wooden beams and, as the name suggests, an extensive wine list, with a wide selection of wines and champagnes available by the glass -- some come from the owners' winery in California. There is also a charming library within the restaurant. The Riverside Bar, open from lunchtime to late evening, offers casual dining and has a patio overlooking the River Great Ouse.

Bedrooms and suites are traditionally furnished and have spacious bathrooms. All have free Wi-Fi.

The approach is disappointingly through an industrial estate, but once inside, the rooms are pleasant and the riverside restaurant seems miles away from such ugliness.

Lovely location and excellent breakfast! Pleasant, quiet room
Other Comments
Overall a good experience but dinner rather marred by staff clearing up after an afternoon tea event. Dining room looked like a school hall with stacked chairs, dinner disturbed by sweeping, intentional busting of balloons and various movements of large boards- not conducive with a relaxing meal. Also limited sweet options as 2 of the 5 were not available.

Staff were friendly and helpful.
Other Comments
We had travelled to Bedford on the M1 which proved somewhat horrendous and was completely blocked the following morning. Dinner was excellent but breakfast was not to the same standard. The price we paid however reflected this so personally I would have been prepared to pay more if the breakfast choice had been better.
