The hotel is 15 minutes from the Charlottesville Amtrak Station and 20 minutes from Charlottesville Albemarle Airport. A complimentary airport/train station shuttle is provided for guests, based on availability and require advance reservations.
Charlottesville is one of the most historically rich cities in the nation -- it's the hometown of two presidents and the site of Civil and Revolutionary war battles. Today, this AAA 4-Diamond resort offers a glimpse into the past along with the modern entertainment and amenities contemporary travelers seek out when vacationing.
Officially part of the Historic Hotels of America, rooms are spread across four buildings, all maintained with historic integrity and luxe decor, such as marble bathrooms. Some accommodations have balconies or patios, the perfect place to watch a sunset with a glass of local wine, and fireplaces as well as modern necessities like free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers and cable TV.
Less than a 10-minute drive from the University of Virginia campus, Boar’s Head Inn is the official hotel for the school and plays host to alumni, families and prospective students. Against a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the 573-acre resort includes a championship golf course, spa, 26 indoor and outdoor tennis courts and 11 squash courts. Guests have the option to take cooking classes (available to groups only) and even float above the mountains on a hot air balloon ride. Bicycles for both children and adults can be borrowed free of charge for use on site along with helmets and property maps. A fun perk is afternoon tea, coffee and pastries each day.
We recommend reserving a table at the Old Mill Room, the on-site restaurant built from the timbers of a 19th century gristmill. The structure survived burning orders from Generals Grant and Custer when Yankee troops marched through Charlottesville, and today serves traditional American favorites for three meals a day and Sunday brunch.
From the press:
"This local landmark resembles an English country inn, with flower gardens, ponds and a gristmill from 1834" -- Fodor's
"The Boar's Head shares Piedmont Virginia's affection for all things historic" -- Travel + Leisure
"One of the best places to sample Virginia wines without trekking to the vineyards" -- Frommer's
"Unlike what you might expect from a college-branded hotel" -- Conde Nast Traveler

Check-in, first room had no lake view, so gave us key to different room. When we used that key, the room was occupied already. Then a third set of keys to yet another room.
Housekeeping left a large bag of garbage in our room.
Cable TV was not working correctly so no watching TV.
Beautiful resort but probably not stay there again.

Mini fridge didn't work (which is a big deal for us). Called it in twice, and was told that it would be replaced that day. Wasn't replaced until we were checking out the next day. There also was a billing error, but it was quickly resolved after calling the front desk. Had I not done so, I would have been overcharged. Made me wonder if they do the same to everyone hoping a certain percentage won't catch/dispute it.

The setting, room and dinner at the Old Mill Room. I've stayed once before and dined many times. The Travelzoo deal was excellent considering it usually costs a lot more to stay there.

Not sure why someone was hammering away outside near my room at about 8:15 AM.

This is a wonderful resort with an "old world ambiance". Our room had everything we needed, the outside view and private patio was great, the facilities and beautiful grounds were spectacular, and the dining room (Old Mill) was incredible.

The surroundings are very pleasant and even though we did not take advantage of their amenities, they were plentiful. Most of all, every staff member we talked to was extremely helpful and professional.
