Overview

The infamous inmate roster housed within the granite walls of Charles Street Jail includes suffragists, Sacco and Vanzetti, U-boat prisoners of war and Malcolm X. Today, the edifice still dominates a riverfront block of Beacon Hill but has been revamped into a posh AAA 4-Diamond hotel.

Dating back to 1851, the historic main building is now the entrance, a soaring atrium and 18 brick-walled guest rooms. The adjoining tower added 280 more rooms, which have just undergone an $11 million renovation. All accommodations include flat-screen televisions, free Wi-Fi and private martini bars; many also offer views of the Charles River and Cambridge. Upgraded from the cots used by convicts, cells now feature mahogany headboards, plush linens and rose-colored walls.

Original floor-to-ceiling windows were kept intact during the $120 million renovation and now the 90-foot central atrium looks out at a landscaped patio that was once the prison yard. Public spaces are linked by catwalks and playful big house puns were used to name the hotel’s bars and restaurants -- Alibi, Clink, the Yard, Catwalk and Scampo -- while room service has been renamed “solitary dining.”

The property offers a 24-hour gym, a running concierge who leads seasonal morning jogs, year-round running route maps and fitness classes taught by Equinox instructors every Saturday morning. Within a 15-minute walk of the hotel, guests will find streets packed with history leading to Boston Common and Faneuil Hall Marketplace. To maximize sightseeing, borrow a bicycle from the hotel at no charge.

Upon checking in I was consistently offered courtyard view rooms on a lower floor. I had the keep repeating that I had paid for a city view room on a higher floor. They finally found me a city view on the 13th floor. Perfect! I completed the checkin process. I was told the room was not yet ready ( It was really too early to check in ) and they would call me when the room was ready. I received a call very shortly after we left the hotel that our room was ready. As we were already downtown we decided to go back later in the day By the time we returned, the room I had checked in to and was promised was no longer available..??!!

The bartender at the bar where we were listening to jazz and catching up with family seemed to have a bit of an attitude which was exceptionally annoying as a) we're restaurant workers and b) We were catching up with family. For example- instead of refilling the water, he would just take the glass away each time, which meant we had to pray to catch his usually-averted-elsewhere eye till he was good and ready to acknowledge us again (we were also eating and drinking cocktails, not just clogging up chairs). I ALWAYS start my tipping at 20-25% and let the service person decide where it will go from there - ended up tipping barely 15%, the people next to us did the same. *note: the bar was mostly full but not THAT full. My office (resort area) is directly across the street from a big restaurant that visitors to the area avoid due to this type of nonsensical power play behavior. honestly - wth? That was the ONLY not great thing about this hotel.
