Could it get any more Milwaukee than this? The Brewhouse Suites is a boutique hotel that was built inside a former Pabst plant, which brewed beers including PBR for over a century. The brewery closed down in the mid-90s, and in 2014, the building was repurposed into a 90-room hotel that keeps the brewing spirit alive.

After you check in (at a front desk lined with beer bottles, naturally), you could take the elevator up to your floor, but we recommend taking the stairs one flight up so you can walk into the grand five-story atrium with the massive original copper brew kettles still housed in the center of the hotel.

Original ironwork and staircases flank the atrium, and at the end of the enclosure you'll see a vintage 1890s stained-glass window, commissioned by Frederick Pabst and featuring King Gambrinus himself, the patron saint of beer. The hotel's outdoor beer garden and public terrace on the fifth floor have some great views of Milwaukee, but the whole factory-turned-hotel interior truly is the showpiece.

Of course, you're not just visiting to look at brew kettles. Rooms range from studios to two-bedroom suites, and all include full kitchenettes with a stove, fridge and microwave along with plush bedding, flat-panel TVs and Keurig coffeemakers. Many rooms feature brick wall accents, soaring ceilings and great views of Milwaukee's skyline from the original arched windows.

A continental breakfast is served daily in the Blue Room, which used to serve as the break room for Pabst employees and is still adorned with touches like PBR bottles that serve as flower vases. There's also a small fitness center, business center and a gift shop with small snacks, drinks and, of course, Pabst merchandise.

The neighborhood that surrounds the Brewhouse Suites is currently best described as "up-and-coming" -- with the new Bucks stadium under construction and a forthcoming brewpub nearby -- but downtown Milwaukee isn't too far away. There's also the Jackson's Blue Ribbon Pub attached to the hotel, which serves exactly what you'd think they would -- cheese curds, sandwiches, burgers and plenty of Wisconsin beer.

Only issue was that the fridge in the room was really loud. I had to unplug it so we could sleep.

Room was unique. I liked the layout.

Staff was certainly not welcoming. Somewhat cold and seemed 'bothered' by our stay. Housekeeping failed to clean our room, thus we had to get clean towels from front desk; bed was left unmade.

The atmosphere. What was done to transform the former Pabst Brewhouse into a quality hotel while paying homage to its roots was special.

We loved the hotel theme and history, the huge 2bd, 2ba suite with kitchen, the included breakfast, 6-pack and museum passes, and the cool second floor where you can sit around the old tanks.
