With its high ceilings and sweeping staircase, Mount Somerset Hotel & Spa mixes Regency splendour with modern comforts. Its hilltop position, overlooking pretty farmland and rolling hills in the Vale of Taunton, ensures splendid views, and four acres of bewitching gardens and award-winning food add to the appeal.

Despite the manor’s generous size, there are only 19 guest rooms, creating an intimate feel. All have been upgraded with tasteful floral prints, plush velvet and free Wi-Fi, while original antique furniture preserves a sense of the mansion’s history. Roll-top baths grace some bathrooms, or upgrade to a Garden Deluxe room for your own private hot tub.

Awarded two Rosettes by The AA Restaurant Guide 2014 for "accomplished modern cooking", the restaurant is a sophisticated space with starched tablecloths and views over the terrace and croquet lawn. The menu stars regional ingredients such as Exmoor lamb, home-smoked salmon, Brixham lobster and Somerset cheese. After dinner, guests can unwind in the cosy lounge, where a fire burns in the winter.

There’s also a gym and a modest Moroccan-style spa, decorated with mosaics and original ornaments from a traditional hammam. It's small, but surprisingly well-equipped, with a steam room, sauna, hydrotherapy bath and foot spa. For the brave, a 'kubel dusche' -- an elevated ice bucket -- provides a refreshing ice shower.

Glastonbury, Wells Cathedral and a brace of historic homes provide good excursion destinations. Exmoor National Park is a 30-minute drive away and the Somerset Levels are even closer.

Sue Apr 23, 2015 Galhampton, United Kingdom
Enjoyed Most: The suite was very good, the bathroom fab but I did not solely book for the rooms amenities. It really does come down to the dining experience for us.
Other Comments: The food was not a 7 course gourmet dining experience that was advertised hence the whole reason of booking in the first place. The fact that we booked this offer was that we knew the hotel had a good reputation and we had built our selves up for that. The manager tried to be helpful on the several mishaps during the meal, a little attention to detail would go a long way. It was a lot to pay for the deal yet two weeks ago we paid £89 and had a amazing time at a pub deal and the food was outstanding.

Enjoyed Most: Room was very nice and the 7 course dinner was very tasty.
Other Comments: Spa facilities were pretty poor and very small. Rain shower didn't work properly.

Enjoyed Most: The exceptionally helpful and friendly staff. Without exception we were looked after with charm.
Other Comments: We enjoyed the Spa. I was a bit surprised that there was no Receptionist but the hotel staff guided us to the Facilities. Excellent buffet breakfast with lovely fruit. The only thumbs down was the haddock and poached eggs which were hard boiled in spite of a request for soft and runny. .
