Overview

The 16th-century Noel Arms is one of the oldest inns in the Cotswolds and is set in the pretty market town of Chipping Campden. The coaching inn has a fascinating history and royal connections -- Charles II reputedly stayed during the English Civil War -- and is in an ideal spot to explore the surrounding Cotswolds. A short drive away are Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick Castle, Blenheim Palace and Cheltenham.

The historic ambiance is kept alive with fine antiques, original log fires and rich fabrics. There are 28 rooms in total, spread across the older part of the property and a modern annex. Expect tea- and coffee-making facilities and en-suite bathrooms with a shower or bath. One of the rooms features a carved four-poster bed that dates back to 1657. In the morning, guests awake to a continental buffet, with a hot full English breakfast served at the table.

The restaurant menu is a mix of contemporary British fare and gourmet curries. Head Chef Indunil Upatissa has won the Best Curry Chef gong at the Great British Pub Awards for the last three years in a row. There's also a little coffee shop open throughout the day, with alfresco tables on the patio.

Guests can also use the spa at sister hotel Cotswold House Hotel & Spa, a 30-second walk away (a supplement applies). Facilities include six treatment rooms, an aromatic steam room, a hydrotherapy pool and a nail bar.

  • "Long before more elegant country houses came along, this old coaching inn was famous" -- Frommer's

The evening meal was excellent, very well presented and there was lots of it .

We were greeted by a lovely young man, who made us feel very welcome, The hotel itself was nice a little tired in places but overall very pleasant. The food was great and service was good too. With regards to the room it was a bit small but the bed was just perfect which lead to a wonderful nights sleep, We would return and would most definitely recommend it to friends.

Food excellent, hotel well situated in the centre of Chipping Campden. Room spotlessly clean.
Other Comments
We were first shown into a ground floor room 29 which was directly opposite the bar seating area and adjacent to the entrance and exit into the hotel car park. For privacy sake curtains had to be permanently drawn, and traffic noise would have been a problem. We mentioned that the room was unacceptable and were eventually moved to a smaller first floor room in quieter part of the hotel. The service at breakfast appeared a little chaotic.

There was a lovely coffee and cake shop on site, which I had a GF cake in the morning when we arrived, that is why we booked it for our evening meal.
Other Comments
Ordered evening meal GF Fish and chips (which is a rarity to get GF Batter). Unfortunately it came rather overcooked rock hard! Sent the meal back and thankfully there was a Co op locally where I bought a salad bowl and bananas. They did ask if I wanted anything else but there was not anything else on the menu that I wanted GF - A beef burger was mentioned but I have never had one!
