Why We Love This Hotel

  • It's an "elegant country house in handsome grounds" (The AA)
  • The restaurant holds 2-AA-Rosettes and grows some of its produce in its kitchen garden and orchard
  • Bath and the market town of Chippenham are both less than 20 minutes' drive

Overview

Guyers House Hotel "retains the charm and ambiance" (The AA) that you would hope for in an English country house. Parts of the property date from 1670, and there are rose arches, a lily pond and pretty walkways within the grounds.

The hotel is five minutes' drive (or 25 minutes' walk) from Corsham, which is known for its independent shops and weekly Tuesday market. The privately owned Corsham Court is home to peacocks -- which you may see roaming the high street -- and is open from 2-4:30pm on weekends (closed in December). The Lady Margaret Hungerford Almshouses and Schoolroom has a preserved 17th-century room with the original furniture still in place (closed December-January).

Castle Combe village is 15 minutes' drive away. With its medieval cottages along the Bybrook River, unchanged since they were built, it is often referred to as "the prettiest village in England" (Rough Guides). You can follow the river into the Wiltshire countryside, or retreat to a fireside table at one of the nearby inns. The honey-hued city of Bath is a 20-minute drive away.

Fruit, vegetables and herbs used in the dining room are likely to have come from the hotel's walled kitchen garden or orchard. Many of the 37 bedrooms overlook the gardens, and there's also a tennis court. Wi-Fi is free.

Room very tired with carpet split. Reception under staffed. Bar bleak and again under staffed. Barman not always there because he was serving in the restaurant quite a long way from bar. Dinner service not adequate head waiter bumbling around in trainers. This certainly isn't a four star hotel.
