Set in an elegant Cotswold-stone building, parts of which date back to the 18th century, Vanbrugh House Hotel is in the heart of Oxford, on a quiet side street. Many of Oxford's highlights are close by. Honey-coloured Christ Church College, with its picturesque quads and Sir Christopher Wren-designed bell tower over the main gate; the Ashmolean Museum of Art & Archaeology, which houses artefacts and artworks from 8000 BC to the present day; and the Oxford New Theatre are all within a few minutes' stroll.

There are numerous eateries, bars and pubs in the area, and the hotel's own restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, when a seasonal set menu is served.

Decor in the 22 individually designed rooms and suites has a range of influences, from classic Georgian and decorative Arts and Crafts, to contemporary eclectic. Bedroom furniture is handcrafted in England. Rooms are individually named to reflect their locations or histories. The Vicarage Suite and Nicholas Hawksmoor room have their own gardens and terraces.
