Why We Love This Hotel

  • This family-run Victorian restaurant with rooms is 15 minutes' walk from Lake Windermere
  • Bowness-on-Windermere is 5 minutes by car, Ambleside is a 15-minute drive away
  • The restaurant is recommended by The Observer's Jay Rayner

The Lamplighter Dining Rooms is a family-run property in the town of Windermere. It dates back to 1865, and is built from Lakeland stone.

Windermere, "the queen of Lake District lakes" (Lonely Planet), is a 15-minute walk away. We recommend the short hike up Orrest Head for superb views of the of Lake Windermere, the Lake District Fells, Morecambe Bay and the Pennines. Bowness-on-Windermere is 5 minutes by car, Ambleside is a 15-minute drive away

National Trust-run Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Dove Cottage, where poet William Wordsworth lived, is a 20-minute drive in Grasmere. You can take a guided tour of the house and gardens, and visit The Wordsworth Museum, which displays his original letters, journals and poems.

The hotel's restaurant serves traditional British dishes, and is a North West finalist in the 2019 Restaurant Awards. The Observer's critic Jay Rayner is a fan of the "glorious" bone-on rib of beef and a "magnificent" cauliflower cheese, which are served at Sunday lunch. The bar stocks local ales, wine and more than 15 varieties of gin. There is a roaring fire in the winter.

In keeping with the 19th-century building, bedrooms have a Victorian look, with striped wallpaper and polished-wood beds. All have renovated bathrooms.

Not the warmest of welcomes and only limited parking. Food however was excellent evening meals and a good choice for breakfast. Rooms in a good location. Not overly luxurious but ok for the price. Very dog friendly and many in the restaurant bar area which isn’t for everyone. It isn’t that big enough to escape two big labs! Very good for dog lovers not so great if you aren’t!!

The evening meal was very good.

Overall decor and furnishings. Large bathroom which was cold and had plain glass window, additional electric heater in bedroom to cover lack of heat from radiator, breakfast was bland. We did arrive early and could get in but there was no one around, wasn’t sure the bell we rang a couple of times was getting through to anyone but eventually attracted a member of staff, just wanted to ask if ok to leave car, which it was.

Very good food
Other Comments
The reason I wouldn’t go back is that we would like to explore other parts of the lakes rather than go back to the same place.

From the moment we arrived we were impressed with the helpful, friendly staff who all worked to a high, professional standard throughout our stay. We had a 3 course meal in the dining room in the evening and were extremely impressed with the choice available, the quality of the food- a special mention to a very good chef, and the friendly, attentive waiters. Our room was spacious and had all the facilities you would need- not boutique standard of being modern but this didn’t bother us. Our visit was great value for money and we would certainly visit again for a short break.
