Overview

The Lamplighter Dining Rooms is a family-run hotel in the heart of Windermere town. The property dates back to 1865, and is built from Lakeland stone.

The hotel is a 15-minute walk from Lake Windermere -- "the queen of Lake District lakes" (Lonely Planet). Rough Guides recommends hiking up to Orrest Head (10 minutes' walk) for the panoramic views. National Trust-run Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Dove Cottage, where poet William Wordsworth lived, is a 20-minute drive away. You can take a guided tour of the house and gardens, and visit The Wordsworth Museum, which displays his original letters, journals and poems.

The restaurant serves traditional British dishes, and was a Taste Cumbria Dining Experience of the Year finalist in the 2016 Cumbria Tourism Awards. The Guardian's critic Jay Rayner is a fan of the "glorious" bone-on rib of beef and a "magnificent" cauliflower cheese, which are served at Sunday lunch. The bar stocks local ales, wine and over 15 varieties of gin. There is a roaring fire in the winter.

In keeping with the 19th-century building, bedrooms have a Victorian look, with striped wallpaper and polished-wood beds. All have renovated bathrooms.

The VERY specific rules on what we could and couldn't have with regards food and drink unless we paid. You were only giving a certain amount to spend on your cocktail and food so ended up with a rather large bill !! We were sat down on entering and given all the regulations to military precision

The food was excellent.

The noise from the traffic is appalling and I found it exceedingly difficult to get to sleep. Food excellent, but was let down at (the very good) breakfast by plastic cartons of jam & marmalade (including golden Shred!). Concerned about the Travelzoo off error which included a 3 course dinner. Mm, it was actually £23 worth. Impossible to get 3 decent courses for that. Should have been specified in the offer

Evening meal

Travelzoo should have made the offer clear that there was an an allowance toward the offered 3 course evening meal, this would save any misunderstanding or embarrassment on arrival. I would however say we had 2 excellent courses which we thoroughly enjoyed but cost slightly more than the allowance.

the food was good, nand the service in the restaurant was great.
Other Comments
the room was at the front of thr property and was very very noisy, both with traffic, but worse of all roudy pub goers from the pub across the road. There was shouting, raised voices, swearing, people knocking things over in the street etc until 2.30-3.00am. Whilst this is not the lamplighters direct responsibility, and they did apologise - we only stayed 1 night out of the two, as didn't want to experience the same lack of sleep 2 nights on the trot. No attempt was made for us to reconsider, or change rooms - even though they were advertising vacancies. \shame as it took the shine off what was a fabulous couple of days in the Lakes.
