The Lamplighter Dining Rooms is a family-run hotel in the heart of Windermere town. The property dates back to 1865, and is built from Lakeland stone.

The hotel is a 15-minute walk from Lake Windermere -- "the queen of Lake District lakes" (Lonely Planet). Rough Guides recommends hiking up to Orrest Head (10 minutes' walk) for the panoramic views. National Trust-run Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her books, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel. Dove Cottage, where poet William Wordsworth lived, is a 20-minute drive away. You can take a guided tour of the house and gardens, and visit The Wordsworth Museum which displays his original letters, journals and poems.

The restaurant serves traditional British dishes, and was a Taste Cumbria Dining Experience of the Year finalist in the 2016 Cumbria Tourism Awards. Jay Rayner is a fan of the "glorious" bone-on rib of beef and a "magnificent" cauliflower cheese, which are served at Sunday lunch (The Guardian). The bar stocks local ales, wine and over 15 varieties of gin, and a roaring fire burns here in the winter.

In keeping with the 19th-century building, bedrooms have a Victorian look, with striped wallpaper and polished-wood beds. All have renovated bathrooms.

The hotel was lovely, the staff were exceptional, the location is perfect for exploring all of the Lake District. The food in the restaurant was fabulous and the staff could not have been more helpful with regards my special diet requirements. I would recommend The Lamplighter to everyone.

"Deal" was not quite what it was sold as. "Free" cocktail had to be priced at £7, or extra paid, but very few on the menu were priced at £7. 3 course meal had a spend limit of £23, which very much restricted choice, again excess over this amount had to be paid for. Room was "adequate" for a one night stay, although we had to use a supplementary electric heater to warm the room, as the central heating radiator was virtually useless. The bed was large and comfortable, and the bathroom had obviously been renovated recently to a high standard. Other than the bed, the rest of the furniture in the room was very dated and looked out of place with the improvements that had been made
