Overview

"A warm welcome awaits" (The AA) at Ees Wyke Country House, which sits on a hillside overlooking Esthwaite Water, one of the Lake District's lesser-known and smaller lakes. The property remained a private residence until 1976, and retains many home comforts inside.

It is in the village of Near Sawrey, a huddle of stone houses surrounded by countryside, and home to National Trust property Hill Top, which Beatrix Potter bought with the royalties from her stories. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was completed while Potter was staying at Ees Wyke.

Hawkshead, home to the Beatrix Potter Gallery (the shop is open year-round), and a 16th-century church that sits on the site of a Norse chapel, is a 5-minute drive away. You can walk the 4.5 miles from Near Sawrey to the Latterbarrow monument, 800 feet above sea level. It is not an intense hike, and there are far-reaching views of the fells from the top.

Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery is also a 5-minute drive away, or a 20-minute walk along country lanes, and it offers boat and bank fishing. It has a fishing tackle shop, and fly-fishing tuition is available. Grizedale Forest -- with its sprawling woodland, scenic trails and sculpture trail -- is a 15-minute drive, as is Wray Castle. The castle is closed for winter from November, but the grounds are free to roam.

You can watch the sun set over the lake from the terrace, or leaf through maps of the local area by the fire in one of the lounges. Breakfast includes sausages from local farms and homemade bread. There are eight bedrooms, some with views of Coniston Old Man or the Langdale Pikes.

We stayed midweek so found the area less busy. Nothing was too much trouble for all the staff. It was good to meet the owner Richard who also does all the cooking. Wonderful food. Spotlessly clean everywhere.

We were on the second floor which was quite a climb. The room was lovely but had very low beams, not a problem for us as we are not very tall.

We loved every minute of our stay at Ees Wyke. The hotel was in a wonderful location, stunning scenery and close to lots to see and do. The hotel itself was lovely, as soon as we walked in we felt "aaaaah", so relaxed. The housekeeper was wonderful for the 3 days we were there. Helpful, cheerful and went the extra mile whenever she could. Richard the owner is also a fantastic chef. Super food and not too cheffy. Breakfasts to die for and the evening meals beautifully balanced and presented.

As an old building Ees Wyke is not for people looking for modern boutique style. Everything was great, super very clean rooms and very comfy beds. Warm throughout the hotel. Two lovely seating / lounge areas, one overlooking fields, hills and the lake. You are greeted with coffee or tea and nothing seems to be too much trouble for the team. We would like to send our personal thanks to Karola and Richard for making this such a great experience.

It is well worth the drive through the twisty lanes to reach this haven of tranquility and magnificent views presided over by a wonderful chef/ proprietor whose attention to detail and his guests make this something special
