The Woodstock Inn sits on land dating back to the 1700s, once owned by the Rockefeller family. Today, it's nestled between the charming town from which it takes its name and Vermont’s only national park, Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park.

Following a $2.6 million renovation last April, the hotel’s front entry, arrival experience and first-floor public spaces have been transformed into a cozy welcome respite. Bookshelves, handpicked furniture and a massive stone fireplace set a homey feel, with the check-in process re-imaged from a singular front desk into several concierge desks to give guests a much more intimate welcome to the property.

Guest rooms are “contemporary and luxurious” (Fodor’s) and feature cherry or mahogany furnishings, handmade quilts and modern amenities like Keurig K-Cup coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs and plush robes. Each suite includes a seating area with writing desk and interior shutters as well as all-white bathrooms decorated with subway tile and marble.

For dinner, visitors can pick from four restaurants on the property including The Red Rooster, a AAA 4-Diamond recipient, the more casual Richardson’s Tavern, Fairway Grill’s seasonal outdoor setting or Out of Bounds’ hearty soups and savory sandwiches during wintertime.

The property’s sprawling grounds include gardens, tennis courts, cross-country skiing trails, a fitness center and indoor sports center and an 18-hole golf course, which is lauded as the oldest golf course in Vermont. The resort’s “stunning” 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art spa where "the mood is peaceful, quiet and serene" (Fodor's) also offers guests a full menu of treatments, plus a eucalyptus steam room, outdoor hot tub and cedar sauna.

Downhill skiing is available at the nearby Suicide Six Ski Area, and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking are available at The Nordic & Tubbs Snowshoes Adventure Center at the resort’s Country Club. A complimentary hotel shuttle runs to the Suicide Six ski area in winter and Woodstock guests score exclusive discounts on ski rentals.

It's a lovely place in the center of town.

We were placed in a room that was likely the most undesirable at the resort. Next to the ice machine, offices, across from public bathrooms. It was incredibly loud. We did mention this at check-out and the woman at reception gave us a $50 discount for the inconvenience. That was appreciated and unexpected.

The concierge recommended a wonderful one hour hike in the morning before breakfast. Bring water. After the amazing bfast buffet we spent the day at the Billings Museum and saw the farm house, garden and animals. We need to go back next time and spend more time in the exhibits (which we ran through) and tour the mansion. We spent our first day lounging around the garden in the Adirondack chairs reading the paper and swimming in the heated pool. My husband took the shuttle to the gym twice and used the sauna. I got a wonderful facial at the spa. We played chess and browsed the classic books in the library. Next time we would also like to ride the bikes, mountain bike at Killington, horseback riding, tour the cheese, brewery and wine, meet the hawks and learn all about them There's plenty to do rain or shine for families and adults. The menu at the Rooster is very special.
