Hallmark Hotel The Queen, Chester is filled with quirky features that reference its Victorian heritage -- look out for the reception desk made out of antique suitcases and bar menus resembling train tickets. There is also a chandelier in the lobby that includes the names of past queens.

The hotel is in the centre of Chester. Lonely Planet describes the city as "one of English history's greatest gifts" because of its medieval architecture and collection of Tudor- and Victorian-era buildings, all encapsulated by a red sandstone Roman wall.

The hotel is opposite Chester railway station, and a 10-minute walk from Chester Cathedral -- founded as a Benedictine abbey in 1092 -- where you can take a tour to the top of the bell tower for panoramic views of the city.

Chester Zoo, with over 15,000 animals from 500 different species including Asian elephants, jaguars and orangutans, is 10 minutes' drive away.

Chester Racecourse, the oldest racecourse still in use in England, is a 20-minute stroll away.

One of the hotel's restaurants -- The King's Grill -- holds an AA Rosette and serves locally sourced food. Breakfast is served in the Jubilee Restaurant and snacks are available in the Waiting Room Bar.

The hotel has secluded Roman-themed gardens, three bars, a fitness suite and free Wi-Fi.

From the Press:

Our upgraded room and the proximity to the railway station

We were disappointed at first having booked a package that included an evening mealie October to be told via Travelzoo that this element of the package would be cancelled with only 6 days before we were due to travel. The hotel did redeem itself with a refund and room upgrade and very pleasant Reception staff. We also really enjoyed Chester and hope to return in the Spring/summer.

Kings Grill lacked any Christmas Decorations. There were Parties going on in other areas of the Hotel, so it's not as though they were unaware it was only 2 weeks before Christmas (I stayed 11/12 December).

This is a really lovely central hotel with loads of history but is also modern and not old fashioned. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. The rooms were lovely and comfortable. Restaurant is super with lots of choice. Can't fault it
Other Comments
there was a party going on in the annexe and they seemed a very young group (teenagers), they were really noisy and a pain in the proverbial - but it didn't spoil our stay

Exceptional room. Overall a beautifully appointed hotel. Directly opposite the train station.
Other Comments
Only let down by lack of dress code in the restaurant. Pyjamas worn during breakfast shouldn’t be allowed & spoilt the ambience & quality/standard of an otherwise exceptional hotel
