Overview

Wadenhoe House is a Jacobean manor in the Northamptonshire countryside, 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Oundle and 30 minutes' drive from the cathedral city of Peterborough. Former occupants include the De Lacy family, who lived here in the mid-1600s and are said to have been conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot.

This Grade II-listed property is set within eight acres of landscaped gardens and woodlands --Travelzoo members have praised the "peaceful surroundings" and "beautiful grounds" (in which you may spot birds, deer and badgers), as well the hotel's "excellent service".

Ramblers can take advantage of the area's many walking routes along the River Nene, passing through waterside meadows and across farmland tracks. The house is also a 5-minute stroll from the village of Wadenhoe, where you will find a country pub and a 13th-century parish church with views of the Nene Valley.

The in-house Bistro offers an eclectic menu that includes a traditional Sunday lunch and afternoon tea. Dishes are freshly prepared by head chef Craig Klein and his team using locally sourced ingredients, together with fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs from the kitchen garden.

Bedrooms are individually designed and retain much of this 17th-century property's original character, with stone mullioned windows offering views over the grounds.

We've also negotiated a 2-course lunch or dinner with wine for two for £29.

In common with many hotels the accommodation and its condition can sometimes take the edge off your stay. Because (we believe) there was a large party the first night we were allocated a very small room which once probably started life as a single. Whilst the bed was comfy the bathroom let it down. it urgently needs a refurb with a crack in the basin, removal and replacement of the old shower with its associated blackened silicone and a clean around the top half essential work to be done. We can only speak as we found it and we did speak with the staff on our departure to make the same points. It was not serious enough to refuse the room. If your trying to attract repeat business these things are important.

This lovely country hotel and its surroundings were ideal for our short stay and the dinner taken on the first night was excellent.. We had coffee in the Cellar Bar after our meal and it was the best coffee I have had in a very long time. The staff were very friendly and helpful and made our stay all the more enjoyable.

It was a shame you couldn't offer an evening meal on the Sunday, because after having such a tasty main and dessert on Saturday we would have loved to repeat it.

The evening dinner dining experience was to be commended. Good food, attractive room, convivial feel. The immediate well kept and imaginatively laid out grounds and the surrounding countryside provide attractive views in all directions. The circular walk from the house beside the river Nene to the next village is well recommended

The gate house (Spinney Lodge) is a bit of a walk from the main house - coats needed after dinner at most times of year. The Garden Lodge is considerably closer - a 50 yard walk at the most - though I suspect the rooms in the main house are quite a bit larger and the staircase, landings and hall ways in the latter I imagine add to the ambience considerably. The low windows in the former stables block (Garden Lodge) do not unfortunately do full justice to the views beyond them - though ours (room 24) was light and airy, beside some elegant mature trees, and with a bath tub as well as a shower
