Wadenhoe House is a Jacobean manor in the Northamptonshire countryside, 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Oundle and 30 minutes' drive from the cathedral city of Peterborough. Former occupants include the De Lacy family, who lived here in the mid-1600s and are said to have been conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot.

This Grade II-listed property is set within eight acres of landscaped gardens and woodlands --Travelzoo members have praised the "peaceful surroundings" and "beautiful grounds" (in which you may spot birds, deer and badgers), as well the hotel's "excellent service".

Ramblers can take advantage of the area's many walking routes along the River Nene, passing through waterside meadows and across farmland tracks. The house is also a 5-minute stroll from the village of Wadenhoe, where you will find a country pub and a 13th-century parish church with views of the Nene Valley.

The in-house Bistro offers an eclectic menu that includes a traditional Sunday lunch and afternoon tea. Dishes are freshly prepared by head chef Craig Klein and his team using locally sourced ingredients, together with fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs from the kitchen garden.

Bedrooms are individually designed and retain much of this 17th-century property's original character, with stone mullioned windows offering views over the grounds.

We've also negotiated a 2-course lunch or dinner with wine for two for £29.

Enjoyed Most: Food was pretty good
Other Comments: We were in an outhouse, converted stables I think; the room was clean but very tired, and in need of refurb. we were glad that we were there only one night. The main room heater was broken, luckily there was another smaller one, but in winter this would not be enough.

Enjoyed Most: The staff are really helpful. Although there was a confusion with the booking as I have upgraded it, but it was resolved as quick as. The experience with the stay was lovely, the garden is just to die for and our room, room 6,can't complain.. Except for the shower pressure. Hopefully something that Wadenhoe need to look at. Oh, I almost forgot, the food is amazing and the deal that we get from travelzoo, there are amazing..

Other Comments: Would go back only on basis of Travelzoo rates. Stayed in attic room which was relatively cold, suspect room was at the end of of the system in terms of heating, same with hot water supply,no supplementary heating available. Overall a reasonable stay apart from above comments.

Enjoyed Most: A delightful property in spacious, well kept beautiful grounds. A quiet retreat just off the beaten track
Other Comments: Did not think it reasonable to charge a booking fee. Although the bed was comfortable and the bathroom well appointed the room had very little space; no room even for one chair and nowhere convenient to place personal belongings; TV very small which spoilt enjoyment of programmes.
