Overview

Eastwood Hall sits in 26 acres of private grounds, 30 minutes' drive from Nottingham city centre. There's a Georgian manor house (pictured) at the heart of the hotel, built for use as a family home around 1810, and later used as the regional office of British Coal. Today the manor is a wedding and conference venue, and bedrooms are in a modern annex at the back of the hotel complex.

The property is on the edge of Eastwood, a former mining town bordered by farms and countryside. There's a heritage centre -- Durban House -- five minutes' walk from the hotel, which used to be offices for the colliery where DH Lawrence's father worked. The DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum is the author's childhood home (open 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday) and is a 10-minute walk from the hotel; you can learn how growing up in Eastwood influenced the author's controversial writing. The Blue Line Trail is a walk that links all of the Lawrence-related sights nearby.

Beauvale Priory and Felley Priory are around 10 minutes' drive away; both have quaint tea rooms that serve homemade cakes and light lunches. The Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site can be explored via the Derwent Valley Heritage Way trail, which is 55 miles long and can be reached from Belper or Duffield, both less than 30 minutes' drive away. Wollaton Hall, Papplewick Hall and Thrumpton Hall stately homes can all be reached within 30 minutes, and Sherwood Forest -- of Robin Hood fame -- is 45 minutes' drive away.

All 150 bedrooms are in a contemporary annex, and are decorated in neutral tones. There's an on-site restaurant and bar. Wi-Fi is free.

The plus side. Room was clean and well presented. Staff were pleasant. Food was excellent.

The photo of the Hall looks to be a small, quiet , intimate setting, unfortunately it was none of that. The picture is very misleading as that building wasn't part of the hotel where we stayed. We were in the middle of two weddings, which took over the hotel. Children running and shouting through the hotel and the bedroom corridors. Trying to get a drink at the bar was a joke. We booked into the restaurant for our meal at reception and when we arrived at the restaurant we were not on the list! During our evening meal, my husband requested a glass of port to go with his cheese and biscuits, he spoke to 3 different people and then had to wait at least 15minutes for the glass of port .

There was a wedding on that took over hotel. Children were jumping all over furniture in the bar. Unable to have a drink. Had to go back to bedroom. And we were not the only people to complain. It was a shame as very nice hotel although waitress during evening meal very slow. Had to order deserts 3 times before we had then and waited 45 minutes
