Stanwell House Hotel is a "characterful boutique hotel"(The AA), and holds three Silver Stars for its superior level of quality and service
It's near the marina in the Georgian harbour town of Lymington -- a "yachting heaven, New Forest base and jumping-off point to the Isle of Wight", according to Lonely Planet
The hotel has tworestaurants, including the 2-AA-Rosette Etain restaurant
Overview
Stanwell House Hotel is an 18th-century former finishing school on Lymington's high street, half a mile from the New Forest National Park. The town has a wealth of history -- it was once a honeypot for smugglers looking to hoard contraband in nearby caves, and its Saturday markethas been running for over 765 years. Today, there's a multitude of white masts in the marina, and the "utterly quaint"(Lonely Planet) cobbled lanes are lined with independent shops.
The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, which has a collection of more than 250 classic cars and motorcycles, is a 15-minute drive away; Buckler's Hard Maritime Museum is 10 minutes' drive from there. Southampton and Lyndhurst are less than 30 minutes' drive from the hotel.
Dinner is served in either the 2-AA-Rosette Etain restaurant or the "intimate" (The AA) Burcher & Co restaurant (subject to opening times and availability; the tasting menu is the same in both restaurants). The Drydock bar offers 25 different gins and a selection of wines, and there's also a cocktail and malt whisky menu.
Garden rooms are in a modern extension at the rear of the hotel, while Georgian rooms are in the oldest part of the main building. Dogs can stay in some ground-floor Garden rooms for an extra £15 per dog, per night. Note: The property is a listed building so there is no lift.

Only negatives when we arrived at 2.30 for our early check in as part of the deal we were very sternly told that check in wasnt till 3. I did explain but no apology or change of tone it was all a bit uncomfortable.
Room needs new pillows as they were very flat and uncomfortable.

The Hotel is very centrally located. The car Park is not the easiest to find, but once there it is ok. The staff are very friendly and helpful the food was very good. The bedroom we had had a few issues with the lights flickering and the garden room could do with another heater in the winter months, but the bathroom was excellent and I think had been very recently refurbished.

Room we had breakfast in was tastefully decorated and more ‘boutique’ than the rest of the hotel.
Other Comments
Tasting menu had some poorly cooked aspects, some items were clearly precooked, in my opinion. Room was very shabby; paper peeling off wall, furniture tired and off poor quality, sink taps loose, shower screen would not stay closed while showering, water pressure completely inadequate for showering and as for ‘boutique ‘, well that word must mean something different in this part of the world. Car park impossible to find unless you go in and ask, in the meanwhile parking is very difficult. Staff should present themselves more professionally, in my opinion.

Great location and very friendly staff. Excellent quality breakfast our only concern was the Taster Menu unfortunately it was just too cold (as if just taken out of the fridge). Amuse bouche was lovely followed by very cold Cray fish and very cold terrine a shame really as it could have been so much better just left out a little longer. To be fair an alternative course was offered. This did not spoil our stay and I would still recommend but probably stick to the A La Carte menu.

Car park is across a busy road so first you have to obtain a token from reception then find the car park and walk suitcases across the busy road. We were booked into a garden room and all garden rooms downstairs are very, very dark. I have a severe intolerance to Garlic & also an intolerance to Onions, this was explained to the hotel prior to booking and we was told that the chef will cater for me especially when I order as all is cooked fresh. Within the booking was a 5 course taster menu on the first night (which we were told was valued at £50.00 each). When I ordered the taster menu, they changed it from (Pork, & Crayfish, two of the courses) to a Potato Cake & Mushrooms on toast as alternatives. When the main course came out I took two bites then had it taken away as it contained Garlic. The alternative was very bland and very tasteless. Did not eat there on the second night. New Manager (Tom, only two days in position) tried his best to sort it next day, but it came up short.

The downstairs was very modern but the rooms were very dated. We were in a room overlooking the High Street which was noisy as the windows are single glazed.
The tasting menu was ok but nothing spectacular, breakfast was very good.
The hotel is in very good location and we managed to get into the car park with excellent directions from one of the staff who guided us there over the phone.

Slow service - particularly in the bar area during the afternoon (20+ minutes to receive drinks. Broken glass served. Glass served with lipstick marks. Wrong drink served) and at dinner (table next to us who also had the same 5 course tasting menu sat 40 minutes after us but were served and finished with food before us. Room was a little tired (toilet seat broken - was not attached to the base, bedside lamp did not work, window did not close properly)

The welcome we received was lovely, and we parked a couple of hours before booking in. The room was comfortable, clean but a little tired. It was very well equipped with robes, an iron and ironing board, and a lovely big en suite. We were confused with our taster meal ( part of the deal) Our table was booked for 7.00 - but no food arrived until 7.45. The waiter brought us some bread ( gluten free well catered for) and said “enjoy your starter”. It was billed as an amuse bouche. It was amusing as we were both so hungry we devoured the bread. Five minutes later the rest of the starter arrived!. A little niggle, but the rest of the meal was satisfactory, and a good deal in all.

We had a very pleasant one night stay at. Stanwell house which is situated very conveniently right in the middle of Lymington high street. We had been to visit Beaulieu Motor Museum and Lymington is about a twenty minute drive away. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and the room was quite spacious and clean and a very good large bath with shower over. The only problem we had was that the TV signal kept cutting out but the was a minor annoyance. We did not have dinner here as we had already booked at The Ship which is right by the water. Breakfast was great. Very hot tea and coffee plenty of cereals, fruit and other delicious things. Hot and freshly cooked breakfast which was very tasty. We would throughly recommend Stanwell house the only drawback being that check is not until 3pm.

We stayed at stanwell four years ago when it was all fresh and new, could do with a bit of a freshen up, every thing was the same as we remembered only worn, chairs soggy, small patches of mold in the bathroom and garden overgrown. Easy things to rectify and make it as lovely as before. Still a great place to stay but just a few pointers to keep it great.

Just two days before going to this hotel I had done a Trust Pilot Report stating that I had been using Travel Zoo for many years and had never been disappointed - I spoke to soon - the stay at Stanwell House was VERY DISAPPOINTING
Receptionist was rude on checking in, barked at us that at 2.30 we were "too early" - no apology when politely being shown it was 2pm check-in
Service at dinner was appalling. Table booked for 7.30, we arrived promptly - took over an hour to get the first course ( which was a tiny amuse-bouche (just one mouthful of fennel wrapped in smoked salmon and tiny shot glass of a tasteless liquid) then another long wait for the second course which was 3 items of tortellini cooked not so much al dente but totally undercooked and rock hard so only tried the one
So after 1 hour and 40 minutes we had only eaten one mouthful of the amuse bouche and one inedible tortellini - so we complained. The third course although small was much tastier came quite quickly and was swiftly followed by the next course, which was quickly snatched away because it was a repetition of the third course. Another 20 minute wait for the main course followed by a similar wait for the dessert Needless to say we did not bother with coffee and left promptly after dessert
The next morning a rude dark haired waitress barked at us asking for the room number before showing us to a table that needed clearing. A 15 minute wait until we were asked what drink we would like, we then waited until they replenished the fruit - after 10 minutes we asked the same waitress if she could please do it - she gave us a very angry look but did do it
When we did get our cooked breakfast it was very tasty and the young waitress who served it was pleasant - but it was not an enjoyable stay and I am unsure whether to complain to the hotel or just put our experience on Trip Advisor

The room we had was very tired with nowhere to place items and no seat other than an uncomfortable window seat. The bathroom fittings were damaged and the shower was not fully cleaned. This was not passed on to the hotel by Travelzoo and, as a consequence, a ground room was not allocated and they couldn't change it. At 6.00pm that evening I had to ring around and find other accommodation.

We've stayed previously and had a most enjoyable time. By comparison, this stay was poor. The hotel's location was very convenient for our needs. I'd seriously consider staying elsewhere though.

The TV in the room wasn't usable due to excessive interference that was spooling the picture quality. The shower head was in need of descaling. Service at breakfast was so slow, we had to remind the waitress of our order. It was about 30 minutes between order and the food arriving, and when it did it was warm at best. When checking out the receptionist asked if everything was okay. The perceived shortcomings were outlined, but there was no offer of any compensation, just a sorry.

We did encounter a problem on the second night of our stay, the tasting menu for the second night was exactly the same as the first night's tasting menu with the exception of a change of soup and a different fish as main. This was extremely disappointing and when I queried this they did change the dessert and one other dish, but the Gish although different from the first night was cooked in the same sauce with same vegetables and mine was raw and to be sent back. When we were checking out and asked if we had enjoyed our stay I did point this out and the receptionist informed me that we should have been offered the normal set menu if we did not to eat the same tasting menu twice. This was not offered by the waiting staff who obviously were not aware and their was no manager in charge as far as we could tell.

We were very pleased with our first visit to the hotel and options provided by Travel Zoo made it excellent value for money.
The only downsides, in room no shaver point and heated towel rail did not work.

It's not impeccable, but it's very good. Very central. Mad for parking. Great for being in the centre and just wandering. Pay the extra and have a ground floor room.

The room we were allocated was in the main building and although it had a four poster bed and was quaint, it overlooked the High street and was very very noisy. Sleep was disturbed so be careful on booking. Terri in the resteraunt was very welcoming.

Excellent staff, great location, superb food. Need a degree in IT to work the TV, shower needs more pressure and no real ale served but still an excellent hotel for a short New Forest break
