The East Sussex National Hotel is set in 1100 acres of countryside. The hotel is around 10 minutes' drive from the borders of the South Downs National Park (an International Dark Sky Reserve) and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is a great base from which to explore their rolling hills and bustling market towns.

The market town of Lewes is approximately 17 minutes' drive away. Explore the Norman castle remains or visit Wealden hall, Anne of Cleves house, given to her as part of the divorce settlement by Henry VIII.

The market town of Battle is approximately 40 minutes' drive away. You can stand on the spot where the Battle of 1066 took place and follow the footsteps of King Harold and William the conqueror.

The Pavilion Restaurant has two AA Rosettes and serves classical dishes prepared with ingredients sourced from local suppliers. The Hunnington Restaurant and Ryder Bar & Terrace is in the golf club house and serves traditional home cooking, light lunches and sandwiches, and it has an outside terrace. The Sussex Lounge has outdoor seating in the gardens or on the balcony terrace, and is ideal to read the morning papers, have a cream tea or an aperitif before dinner.

Rooms are designed in neutral colours and Club Rooms have balconies that overlook the golf course and the countryside.

The health club offers aerobics classes and its facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a spa pool, a sauna, and steam room and a gym. Horsted Spa has an aromatherapy room, a monsoon shower, a Jacuzzi, a steam room and sauna and a relaxation room. There is limited availability in the spa on weekends -- pre-book treatments to avoid disappointment and to use the facilities.

There are also two championship golf courses, including the East Course and West Course.

On 2 September watch "A Midsummer Night's Dream" al fresco, performed by the Chapterhouse Theatre Company. Tickets cost £10-£42. There's also a BBQ every Sunday in August from £9.95 per person. Call in advance to pre-book your tickets.

Enjoyed Most: Hard to say, as we enjoyed everything! Lovely big room, with bath as well as shower, and stunning views from our balcony. The food was great, and the pool and spa facilities were a welcome addition on our two day break. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

Enjoyed Most: The location no view
Other Comments: Had to ask for more coat hangers, only four in the wardrobe for two people.. Pillows hard, they happily supplied more soft ones. Lighting in dining area very dull especially at night, could hardly see what we were eating but food good.
