Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa is just outside the village of Donnington in west Berkshire, and has an extensive list of facilities, including a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant, a spa and an on-site 18-hole golf course. It also has four AA Silver Stars, an accolade given to properties offering a superior level of quality in hospitality, service and cleanliness.
The town of Newbury is around 10 minutes' drive from the hotel, and is home to Newbury Racecourse. Highclere Castle, used for exterior shots of Downton Abbey in the popular ITV drama of the same name, is a 15-minute drive. English Heritage attraction Donnington Castle, a 14th-century castle where Henry VIII and Elizabeth I are believed to have stayed, is a 15-minute walk away.
The "state-of-the art" spa (The AA Hotel Guide 2019) has an 18-metre pool surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows. There's also a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam room, an aromatherapy room and experience showers. Pre-booked spa treatments are also available (supplements apply).
There's an 18-hole golf course on site and a Grade II-listed Victorian clubhouse with views over the fairways. There's also a club shop. It's £25 per person per round, which must be booked in advance (payable directly to the hotel).
The 2-AA-Rosette WinePress Restaurant serves "imaginative food complemented by a superb wine list", says The AA, and the hotel's bar is open daily, offering sharing platters, drinks and meals.
Executive rooms have views of either the golf course or the Berkshire countryside. All rooms have free Wi-Fi.

Everything about it was good quality. One of the best short breaks we have had.

Very clean and spacious rooms. Some very helpful staff willing to listen to concerns and rectify issues.

The food was disappointing, not the level you'd expect for a 4 star hotel. Spa treatments a little overpriced.

All ok, but the chef would do better to serve 'mushy peas' when requested, and not petit pois floating in a garlic sauce (to which I am allergic). The ingredients of mushy peas are peas. It is not 'posh' to add anything else.

Excellent visit, very clean, lovely room and the food was exceptional, the dinner menu didn’t do it justice
Breakfast was again excellent a very good selection. The spa/pool. Was very good, very modern. The public areas ie. bar and restaurant were a little soulless and not all that comfortable but overall this was minor in the big scheme of things. Would definitely take up the offer again.

Spoke to the head chef who was very pleasant chap and he explained his theory about the menu, he wanted it to be a surprise, and it was, best l’v had in general hotels l’v stayed in. No tourist info in the hotel and the receptionist hadn’t got much idea either, but it wasn’t really that critical. Overall an enjoyable trip

All the staff were lovely and very helpful just need to be more aware of customer needs we were left 30 mins on the evening waiting for someone to ask if we would like dessert menus the restaurant was at this stage fairly quite. We also had to remind staff that we would like tea and coffee at breakfast after a bit of a wait.
