With medieval origins, this manor house hotel, which is Grade I-listed, offers an atmospheric place to stay, as well as a new multi-million-pound spa. Much of the present structure of the historic building dates from the 17th century, though there are 16th-centrury decorative details and there was some rebuilding during the late 20th century. Original features include carved stone doorways and fireplaces.
Boringdon Hall's name means 'enchanted place on the hill' and it is set in South Devon's rolling countryside, around 5.5 miles northeast of Plymouth. It's well placed for exploring coastal beauty spots and chocolate-box pretty villages, as well as wild and beautiful Dartmoor.
There's a choice of two elegant dining spaces at the hotel. Period features abound in the Great Hall, which serves a bar menu of drinks, light lunches and traditional afternoon teas -- it has wooden panelling, ornate leaded windows and a fireplace with a decorative mantle bearing the date 1640. For fine dining head to the Gallery Restaurant. It overlooks the Great Hall and serves a seasonally changing menu of beautifully presented dishes that use local ingredients where possible. With its exposed beams and comfortable armchairs, the Remy Bar is a cosy spot for a pre-dinner drink or a cocktail.
Gaia Spa has an indoor pool and a hydrotherapy pool featuring an outdoor swim-through with countryside views. There's an air-conditioned gym and 12 tranquil treatment rooms. Other facilities include crystal salt and aromatherapy steam rooms, and a herbal sauna. The Spatisserie is a light and airy space that serves light lunches, afternoon tea and decadent extras such as champagne. It has two outdoor terraces with views towards Dartmoor.
Rooms have free Wi-Fi and extras such as coffee machines. The hotel offers a turndown service for all room categories. Courtyard rooms are in a newer wing of the hotel, a short walk from the manor house. There are romantic four-poster rooms featuring antique furniture and original features, plus suites with outdoor Jacuzzis.
