"The building and decor are beautiful, old world yet very accommodating. Helpful staff (thanks, Justin!) - the lovely Caroline's food, staff and atmosphere, the Riverboat Lounge very inviting. We'd like to return for a music or trivia night."

Reputedly the hideout of mobster Al Capone in the 1930s, Hotel Julien Dubuque is an impressive property in an excellent location, facing the Mississippi River. It is set in Dubuque's downtown Old Main District and is just five minutes' walk from the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium. Restaurants and bars on Main Street are a block away and Diamond Jo is 10 minutes' walk around the harbor. The hotel dates back to 1915 and touches of its glamorous heritage still remain, from the Tiffany glass doors to the marble floor tiles in the lobby.

Caroline's Restaurant is a popular option for American dishes and Mississippi favorites, including catfish cakes and Cajun-style chicken and shrimp, and the relaxed Riverboat Lounge (closed Sundays) caters for evening drinks and snacks. Ask for a seat on the outdoor terrace for the best river views. The mosaic-tiled spa offers treatments inspired by Native American medicine -- try the many hands massage -- and there’s also an indoor pool and whirlpool (heated with geothermal energy), as well as a gym overlooking the pool.

The rooms have nice updates but mirror the same design of the hotel with vintage photos and art deco-style lamps add a touch of Hollywood glamor. Bathrooms have granite counter tops and walk-in showers or bath tubs. Ask for a river-facing room for a quieter night (rooms on the street side can be noisy). Suites have separate sitting rooms for extra space and some come with whirlpool bathtubs for two. The most extravagant is the signature Al Capone Suite, with two en suite bedrooms, a full kitchen and a sizeable walk-in vault.

Enjoyed Most: It is a nice facility.
Other Comments: It was a total hassle. They charged my credit card for the room even though I gave them the voucher that I had already paid for. It took until just a couple weeks ago to get it resolved.

Enjoyed Most: Otherwise everything else was great.
Other Comments: We were there in December two nights with the vouchers and loved everything about it. This time we stayed 2 nights again. The room did not appear to have been dusted in days, the lamps and night stands were very dusty. The first morning we left the room at 9am and didn't return until 5pm to find our room had not been visited by housekeeping. We had to call and they sent 2 guys that didn't seem to know what exactly to do. Mike stayed in the room while they were cleaning and they weren't even going to vacuum and Mike made them. The one guy was going to throw the comforter on the floor to make the bed and Mike stopped him from that. The towels they left on the hanging rack were bath mats and not hand towels. I wish they would leave their flavored water fountain in the lobby out past 8pm it's great and beats the tap water in the room.

Enjoyed Most: Very nice historic. Rooms were updated nicely
Other Comments: A bit stuffy. It was very hard to book. Lots of rules and the amount of rooms available for the Travel Zoo deal were very few. They would not even let you pay extra to upgrade to rooms that they had empty. Ended up having to take off a Monday from work just to use the coupon on a Sunday night!

Enjoyed Most: This wasn't our first stay at Hotel Julien and it won't be the last. We love the location, the ambiance and decor, and breakfast at Caroline's restaurant is becoming a tradition for us. Recommend!
