On the Ottawa River, with its own marina and within a 10-minute walk of Manoir-Papineau National Historic Site and Sanctuaire Notre-Dame d'Etchemin, this AAA 4-Diamond hotel is the world's largest log structure. The main centerpiece is the impressive hexagonal rotunda with 65-foot stone fireplace.

Founded in 1930, this rustic and historic hotel may be showing its age but is still beaming with charm. From the sprawling grounds to the chalet-inspired decor of small but comfortable rooms, Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello is memorable inside and out.

On-site dining options vary; fine-dining at Aux Chantignoles open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, bistro fare and cocktails at Seigneurie Bar open daily from 5:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. The outdoor barbeque on the terrace at Le Riverain is open evenings throughout the summer.

With panoramic windows overlooking the marina, the hotel's spa with center fireplace feature registered massage therapists and offer treatments such as maple sugar body scrubs and green blanket body wraps. Adjacent, the 75-foot indoor heated pool is encompassed by red cedar logs and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Outdoor activities abound including an 18-hole Golf Club, designed in 1929 with views of the surrounding Laurentians, as well as family-friendly fun such as on-site weekend movie nights, arts and craft at Bello's Club and nearby horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking.

Hotel was fine (except for the one meal - see above comment). Rooms were fine, very nice ambiance in the main areas. Our dissatisfaction was weather related, and due to bad timing
Other Comments
The weather was lousy, so we couldn't do what we wanted (ski, skate) outside. Our backup plan was to relax and read by the pool and hot tub, but it turned out that Quebec's 'March break' is at the end of February, so it was filled with kids. Bad timing! We left a day early (staying 1 of 2 nights), but were unable to cancel without charge. They charged us for the second night, but did extend a credit for $145 to be used by us prior to year end (unfortunately, only at this specific Fairmont). The food at Le Bistro was disappointing, very humdrum, especially for the price charged. French fries were mediocre at best.

We loved the fireplace and the old building. The pool was great. The people were very pleasant. We enjoyed the experience but hugely expensive
Other Comments
It was hugely expensive with lots of added costs - taxes, resort fees. It was not that we didn't enjoy the experience but the dog sledding was called off due to the weather, skiing etc and trails not operational due to the weather, power cut off to pool for the day we were there but they did have auxiliary power to main building but we did not get to do the things we wanted to do.... I have done several trips with Travelzoo and have always been very happy with the result. It was my husband's birthday and I wanted to treat him but will take the Travelzoo trip to Iceland next time - cost the same..! (one ticket!).
