The busy port and resort city of Agadir, rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1960, "feels unlike anywhere else in Morocco" (Lonely Planet) -- here, it's all about the sun, the sea, the sand and relaxation, which the boutique Le Riad Villa Blanche hotel offers guests in spades. It features an enticing modern spa, a shaded inner courtyard and gardens, and is within easy reach of the sandy beach (an 8-minute walk) and city centre (a 20-minute walk), so is ideal for families, couples and individuals seeking chilled-out pampering.
Although modern Agadir features many gleaming resort complexes along the coast, as well as concrete monstrosities in town, the Kasbah, port and marina are worth exploring if you can prise yourself from your sun bed. Originally built in 1541 and restored in the early 18th century, the Kasbah's outer walls, set atop a hill overlooking the port and marina, remarkably survived the quake; the inscription above the gate, which says "Believe in God and respect the King" in Dutch and Arabic, is a reminder of Agadir's historic significance as a trading port. Views from the top are excellent, but the hike up can be uncomfortable in the heat, so it's best to take a taxi (approximately MAD25). Continue to the port for a glimpse of authentic Moroccan life amid the commercial fishing boats, souk and galleries, or head to the marina -- a purpose-built pleasure port with international shops, restaurants and cafés, and group boat trips. There's also a free shuttle to the golf course at Golfe de L’Ocean, as well as other golf courses nearby.
The hotel has 28 spacious and elegant, pet-friendly rooms and suites blending traditional Moroccan décor with contemporary design and fixtures. Each includes a king-size bed, a large bathroom, free Wi-Fi, a satellite TV and a mini bar; some feature balconies or terraces with sea views. Upgraded rooms offer additional sitting/sleeping areas. Room service and free parking are available, and there are facilities for disabled guests.
There's an intimate, upscale restaurant serving Moroccan-French cuisine and two bars (including the seasonal pool bar serving snacks and light lunches; mineral water and herbal drinks are available in the spa bar). Other amenities include a lounge, a library, an outdoor pool, a shaded courtyard and garden, as well as a luxurious contemporary spa with massage rooms and treatment cabins, a heated indoor pool with balneotherapy, a hammam/sauna, a private Jacuzzi, a fitness centre, and a suite for two with a private sauna and a hammam.
