Ellenborough Park "makes a striking first impression", according to The Daily Telegraph, and The AA Hotel 2016 praises this "impressive", "beautifully restored" hotel.
The 5-star property dates back to the 16th century and is set within the original Cheltenham Racecourse estate. Sudeley Castle & Gardens in the Cotswolds is around 10 minutes' drive away.
The Beaufort Dining Room (open Tuesday-Saturday) has three AA Rosettes and serves modern British dishes. You can also dine in The Brasserie, which serves classic British fare, or take afternoon tea in the "sigh-inducingly grand" (The AA) Great Hall.
Rooms were designed by Nina Campbell and are located in four separate buildings -- the Main House, The Mews, Ellenborough Gate and Woodland Court -- and suites are named after famous racehorses. Classic Rooms are larger than Traditional Rooms and some have roll-top baths and walk-in showers. Views include the kitchen garden, the courtyard and the racecourse.
The Indian-themed spa has seven treatment rooms plus a couples' room, a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam room, a relaxation room and an outdoor heated pool.
