Overview

With wall-mounted stag heads, oak-beamed ceilings and a weathered yellow-stone exterior, The Speech House Hotel's origin as a hunting lodge for King Charles II is clear throughout.

It's set in the middle of the Forest of Dean, which is said to have inspired JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth. The forest also featured in "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows", and it borders the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Symonds Yat Rock, which has views of the River Wye from 120 metres up and is popular with hikers and birdwatchers, is 20 minutes' drive.

Monmouth Canoe and Activity Centre, where you can hire kayaks and Canadian canoes for a paddle on the River Wye, and Goodrich Castle, a ruinous Norman castle, are also around 20 minutes' drive away.

Tintern Abbey -- the inspiration for Wordsworth's famous poem -- is 25 minutes' drive. The Dean Forest Railway operates steam and diesel trains from Lydney to Parkend; Norchard station, which also has a museum, is around 10 minutes' drive.

Kymin Hill, which features a charming 18th-century round house and naval temple overlooking Monmouth and the Wye Valley, is 25 minutes' drive away.

The Orangery and bar serves light lunches, fresh coffee and traditional pub food. The restaurant has been a court for the local Verderers (who meet four times a year to discuss the protection of the forest) since 1696, and it serves an à la carte menu and homemade desserts. Wi-Fi is free in public areas. Courtyard rooms are in external buildings behind the main house.

We chose this hotel as a stop off location on our way to West Wales. The area is beautiful - Wye Valley - and directly opposite the hotel is access to a sculpture park, part of a range of walking and biking trails - very popular with families. We loved it as it was great dog walking territory - much appreciated by our passion russell terrier. She also loved the accommodation at the hotel - although we could not stay in a 4 poster room because of her (sob!) - as a special dog rug was provided to protect the bed, as well as dog bowl and towel. Genuinely pet friendly hotel!
