Overview

With wall-mounted stag heads, oak-beamed ceilings and a weathered yellow-stone exterior, The Speech House Hotel's origin as a hunting lodge for King Charles II is clear throughout.

It's set in the middle of the Forest of Dean, which is said to have inspired JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth. The forest also featured in "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows", and it borders the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Symonds Yat Rock, which overlooks the River Wye from 120 metres up and is popular with hikers and birdwatchers, is 20 minutes' drive.

Monmouth Canoe and Activity Centre, where you can hire kayaks and Canadian canoes for a paddle on the River Wye, is 20 minutes away.

Tintern Abbey -- the inspiration for Wordsworth's famous poem -- is 25 minutes' drive. The Dean Forest Railway operates steam and diesel trains from Lydney to Parkend; Norchard station, which also has a museum, is 10 minutes' drive.

The Orangery and bar serves light lunches, fresh coffee and traditional pub cuisine. The restaurant has been a court for the local Verderers (who meet four times a year to discuss the protection of the forest) since 1696, and it serves an à la carte menu and homemade desserts. Wi-Fi is free in public areas. Courtyard rooms are in external buildings behind the main house.

Enjoyed Most: The location in the middle of the Forest of Dean and the character of the old house and its history

Enjoyed Most: Nice setting in the middle of the forest, but close enough to local towns. Excellent for walkers and cyclists, although not our scene. Plenty of parking spaces and nicely laid out flower beds. Lovely room with plenty of space, comfy large bed and easy chairs.
Other Comments: Downside being on the second floor with no lift, hard work to carry up luggage. On a busy road junction and a cattle crossing out of the car park, both of which were a bit noisy at night.

Enjoyed Most: The hotel was great, a good location at the centre of the forest, very quiet, our room was very clean and well decorated, first class food and service. We would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting The Forest of Dean any time of the year, we will come back to this hotel again next year without question.
Other Comments: You will not find a finer hotel in The Forest of Dean, fisrt class in every way, well done to all the staff.
