The Hotel Mediolanum is a smart pick just on the outskirts of Milan’s historic centre, set halfway between the Porta Venezia and Centrale train station. It’s well placed for visiting the Modern Art Gallery and the Milan Natural History Museum, both 15 minutes’ walk away, or taking a stroll in the Giardini Pubblici Indro Montanelli park, just 10 minutes on foot from the hotel. Transport links are also excellent -- Milan’s main train station and the nearest tram stop, Settembrini Cincinnato, are both a short walk.
Interiors at this well-groomed property are colourful and chic -- the décor is designed according to chromotherapy principles, using colour to help enhance moods. You’ll find abstract sculptures in the lobby and the retro bar has a futuristic 1970s style, right down to the shaggy rugs, beanbags and Tulip chairs. Open from 10:30am until midnight, it serves drinks and all-day snacks. The hotel also has a cosy dining room, which hosts the daily buffet breakfast.
There’s a business corner for free internet access, printing and photocopying and guests also have access to the fitness facilities at sister hotel Hotel Sanpi, 10 minutes’ walk away. The gym is housed within a brick-lined wine cellar.
The bold colours continue in the rooms, accompanied by mirrored furniture and cheery-wood trimmings. Half are specially designed to provide colour therapy (on request), and there are the occasional LED light constellations on the ceiling. A few rooms have a balcony, but all offer flat-screen satellite TVs, free Wi-Fi access and a mini bar. Bathrooms (some with glass walls) are equipped with either bathtubs or showers.
