Why We Love This Hotel

  • This "stylish" Cornish retreat is in a "lovely spot" with views of Fowey's waterfront (Alasdair Sawday's)
  • It occupies a Victorian former seamen's shelter and has 13 individually designed bedrooms
  • The Eden Project, Lanhydrock and The Lost Gardens of Heligan are less than 45 minutes' drive away

Overview

With good food and harbour views, The Old Quay House is a "stylish hotel" within the Polperro Heritage Coast, which Alasdair Sawday's calls a "lovely spot". The Daily Telegraph says it has "dazzling views" across the Fowey Estuary and "front row seats" to the river.

The property is a Victorian former seamen's shelter that today has earthy tones, natural fabrics and big windows to make the most of the views. The 13 bedrooms are all individually designed, and Classic rooms have views of the quaint high street, while Superior rooms have partial estuary views.

The restaurant showcases local seafood, West Country meat and Cornish cheeses, and there is also a "sunny" (The Times' Cool Hotel Guide) terrace with "great" views of the river -- a fine spot to stop for a drink and watch the boats go by, and even spot the occasional dolphin.

Fowey is a "stunningly picturesque" town, says Condé Nast Traveller. It has plenty to do, whether it's browsing the independent boutiques and art galleries or eating fish and chips on a harbour wall. You can join the South West Coast Path and walk from the head of the estuary to St Catherine's Castle, 20 minutes away.

The Eden Project is less than 20 minutes' drive away. The National Trust property, Lanhydrock, is less than 25 minutes' drive away and The Lost Gardens of Heligan is less than 45 minutes' drive away.

The first room we were put in overlooked the highstreet- unfortunately due to high winds the hotel sign outside the window was making high squeeking noises. Mentioned it to the guy on reception and he instantly changed our room with no fuss or hesitation- very good service.

the hotel was very clean, smart and served very good food - excellent chef. But it was very quiet - only 2 rooms occupied and we were the only table for dinner, so not much atmosphere. the car park was 10 minutes away - not good when it is raining. We were also given a back room with no view - it would have been a nice gesture to give us a front room when there were very few guests. We were also put on the second floor with a lot of stairs to climb - not good as I have a pace maker and heart condition. there were plenty of empty rooms available on the first floor. At our hotel in Brixham we were up graded to a front room at no extra cost.

We also found the price of drinks very expensive, which I did not realise until I paid the bill. this is probable the reason why the hotel and bar were so quite.

Comfortable, very comfortable! Very nice rooms, good location. Excellent cooking - only equalled by one place I can ever recall.

Best hotel staff we've ever met. Would like to have staed in the penthouse suite, but it was just too expensive - maybe offer an out-of-season 'get it cheap if you swim across the river naked' type deal?

Loved it. All staff were very good. Reception staff in particular were outstanding...nothing too much trouble and very cheerful. The dinner on the first night was excellent and a real treat.

As with the majority of the properties in the Main Street, you cannot park close to the hotel. Parking is provided a short distance away. You can drop and collect luggage easily enough though. Not an issue for us.
