The Blackstone, A Renaissance Hotel

Why We Love It

  • This historic hotel has hosted mob bosses and presidents; a special Secret Service room is separated from the rest of the hotel by hollowed-out walls
  • A $128 million renovation in 2008 updated the hotel from head to toe
  • On-site tapas restaurant Mercat a la Planxa is a favorite with locals and visitors alike
  • Two blocks from Lake Michigan; many rooms have unobstructed views of the lake

Originally built in 1910, the Renaissance Blackstone Chicago was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. In 2008, it reopened as a modern 4-star hotel after at $128 million renovation.

With dark wood paneling and pops of color, the hotel combines its historic past with modern comfort and style. Art enthusiasts may be interested in checking out the 1,600 contemporary artworks, primarily by Chicago artists, on display throughout the hotel.

While each of the hotel's 332 guest rooms is unique, each has upscale amenities including pillowtop mattresses, rich cotton linens, marble entryways and local artwork. Many rooms offer views of Lake Michigan. Upgraded Club Level rooms on floors 20-23 include complimentary continental breakfast and refreshments, as well as evening turndown service.

The on-site restaurant, Mercat a la Planxa, earns rave reviews for its upscale tapas menu, excellent wines and upbeat atmosphere.

Located on Michigan Avenue in the South Loop, the hotel is across from Grant Park and two blocks from the lakefront. the Art Institute of Chicago is a 12-minute walk up Michigan Avenue, while the Field Museum is a 15-minute stroll south of the hotel.

The location was perfect. Parking was available two blocks away with 24 hour parking for $30.00. We had a lake view room with views of Navy Pier to Soldiers Field. It was a 20 minute walk to the Oriental Theater. Elevator service was excellent, and the floor was very quiet. Complimentary breakfast was very basic, but they were remodeling the hotel restaurant. The hotel decor and the Art Hall were amazing.

The Travelzoo deal was excellent. It included access to the club room which meant breakfast and evening buffet meal. Also there were two drink vouchers. The location is only a few blocks south of the Art Institute. The building is refurbished old Chicago architecture.
