Set in West Yorkshire, close to Halifax and the rugged South Pennine countryside, this "delightful" (The AA) ivy-clad Jacobean manor retains many of its original features, including open fireplaces and stone mullioned windows. On the edge of the area known as Brontë Country -- for its association with the famous literary sisters -- the 17th-century Holdsworth House Hotel & Restaurant is no stranger to celebrity guests, having hosted Jamie Oliver and The Beatles. It also featured in the BBC's "Last Tango in Halifax".

The hotel is on the outskirts of Halifax, where the villages surrounding the town blend into the Yorkshire countryside. It is around 45 minutes' drive from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Peak District National Park.

Keep an eye out for the stone Maltese cross above the hotel's central gable, which denotes that at one time the estate was in the hands of the ancient Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem.

The hotel's "elegant" candlelit and oak-panelled 2-AA-Rosette restaurant uses local produce -- The AA says, "dinner provides the highlight of any stay". Long Bar serves local ales on tap and cocktails.

Rooms have Wi-Fi and room service is available 24 hours a day.

The old building is steeped in history and remains in a largely unmodernised state. This creates a unique ambience which appeals to anyone appreciating quality and a link across the centuries. The hotel is cosy warm and welcoming. Our bed supremely comfortable. Thanks for a memorable time.

Had sirloin steak which we asked for it to be cooked in garlic. Very obliging and was cooked to perfection. Good quality food with an excellent chef.
Other Comments
Very professional staff on reception who were very obliging. Only negatives were bed was hard so didn't sleep well and not much in the local area. We like to walk but couldn't find a suitable route. Perhaps something the hotel can work on in the future. Most people like to keep fit these days.

My wife was in pain due to a post op recovery and staff behind reception did make a plan when I asked if there were any hot packs available Most was plesentjust what I mentioned above put a damper on whole experience Closing kitchen and not giving prior notice when afternoon tea and food menu is supposed to be big attraction of the hotel
Other Comments
Had to call staff to take our food order and no follow up to see how the meal was or if we wanted anything else Also on the Monday the kitchen was closed for so called electrical repairs which we were not informed about Found out when asked if bar was open as we were planning lunch there as we only needed to be in Leeds late afternoon
