Overview

Set near South Pennines countryside on the outskirts of Halifax -- an area known as Brontë country for its association with the famous literary sisters -- the "delightful" (The AA) 17th-century Holdsworth House Hotel has hosted celebrity guests including Jamie Oliver and The Beatles (who checked in for John Lennon's 24th birthday). The hotel also recently featured in the BBC's "Last Tango in Halifax".

There are oodles of historic touches in this Jacobean manor, including open fireplaces, oak panelling, stone-mullioned windows and the more curious wig cupboards. Look out for the stone Maltese cross, indicating that the property had links to the knights' Order of St John of Jerusalem.

Room furnishings are in keeping with the hotel's period features. The AA Hotel Guide, which has awarded the hotel two Rosettes for the last 16 years in a row, says that dinner in the hotel's candlelit oak-walled restaurant is "the highlight of any stay". It is also recommended on Jamie Oliver's Guide to the Best of British Food mobile app. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and features dishes using thoughtfully sourced ingredients such as Easingwold pork tenderloin and local Yorkshire cheeses.

The hotel has free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service.

Enjoyed Most: Holdsworth House is a beautiful old property. ( It's sad that old establishments have to sell off their land for property developers). That said the it is a House possessing much character with intricate patterns of the box hedging to compliment the historic frontage of this period House. Staff were friendly and helpful, ready to provide assistance when required. The restaurant food which we ordered was excellent. We were able to enjoy our dining experience in a relaxed and comfortable environment. The wine list was extensive and more than sufficient to meet the needs of those with a discerning palate. The hungry hunter would not have been disappointed in the breakfast bar provision with a Full English Breakfast - cooked to perfection to follow. Toast, tea and coffee. A thoroughly enjoyable dining experience is to be enjoyed here.
Other Comments: I would highly recommend anyone considering taking a break at Holdsworth House Hotel not to hesitate further. You'll enjoy the excellent food, customer service and cleanliness of the bedrooms.
