Lace Market Hotel occupies a Georgian townhouse on a cobbled street in Nottingham's trendy Lace Market. It reopened in November, 2015, after an extensive refurbishment of the bedrooms, restaurant and bar, and is now an "oasis of affordable luxury with the added bonus of truly amazing staff", according to The Derby Telegraph.

The Merchants Restaurant serves modern British dishes and afternoon tea. It's open daily for breakfast and lunch, and Monday-Saturday for dinner. For classic pub grub, head to the Cock & Hoop Pub, open daily. The Saint Bar has a marble counter and decorative wood-panelled walls, and a team of mixologists creating an eclectic range of cocktails.

Bedrooms range from Single Rooms to Studio Suites; all have contemporary décor and free Wi-Fi.

As for Nottingham, it's not just Robin Hood that puts it on the tourist map -- in 2015 it was officially declared a UNESCO City of Literature thanks to the likes of DH Lawrence, Lord Byron and Alan Sillitoe. Download the Sillitoe Trail app and explore the five locations from the novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, including the Old Market Square, The White Horse, the Raleigh factory, the River Trent and the Goose Fair.

Other city highlights include Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, which claims to be one of Britain's oldest pubs, Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery, both a 10-minute walk from the hotel, and the Galleries of Justice Museum, which is opposite the Lace Market hotel. Notice the 19th-century industrial architecture throughout the Lace Market district from the period when Nottingham was the world leader in lace making.

Enjoyed Most: Central location. Attractive building. Menu choice.
Other Comments: We had the feeling that we had been given one of the 'poorer' rooms, which was a little shabby, and had a very poor view from it's windows. The food was excellent, but incredibly expensive.
