On the edge of the Cotswolds in Upton St Leonards, just three miles from Gloucester, Hatton Court is a country-house hotel that dates back to the 1920s.

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Gloucester with its 11th-century cathedral and famous rugby club. The historic dock area has been transformed into a shopping and cultural area with a designer outlet mall, a waterways museum, and several bars and restaurants. The pretty Cotswold village of Painswick can be reached in five minutes and there are plenty of walking trails in the local area.

Behind the ivy-clad facade, the hotel's interior has a classic country-inn style with high ceilings and roaring fires. The Tara Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the Tara Brasserie dishes up lighter bites. A traditional afternoon tea is served daily and can be enjoyed outside on the terrace overlooking the Severn Valley in summer.

The rooms all have tea- and coffee-making facilitates and free Wi-Fi, and most overlook the surrounding countryside. Superior Rooms feature a whirlpool bathtub. Upgrade to a Junior Suite for a four-poster bed, a sitting area and a whirlpool bath.

Enjoyed Most: Beautiful hotel, Lovely decor, clean and comfortable. Staff were lovely. Food was fabulous, dinner and breakfast. Would definitely recommend. There was a wedding going on when we got there and I was a little concerned of it ruining our/their stay.... But nope they looked like they had a fabulous time as did we.

Enjoyed Most: Everything!
Other Comments: Good size hotel, not too large or too small, easy to find as close to town yet seems in the countryside. Food and value excellent too

Enjoyed Most: The service at dinner (but not breakfast) was very good and we had an excellent dinner.
Other Comments: The room was badly in need of refurbishing - damp on either side of the windows had stained the wallpaper which was detached from the wall and the paintwork in the bathroom was in a bad state. The shower was dangerous and almost impossible to get less than scalding.

Enjoyed Most: Everything! Rooms nice, staff great, atmosphere pleasant
Lisa Jul 01, 2015 London, United Kingdom
Enjoyed Most: staff and food - excellent
Other Comments: Shame that it is so near the noisy M5 and the grounds are not very evident. Will be better when the old part of the hotel has been renovated.
