Overview

Surrounded by 2,600 acres of nature in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains and close to the Appalachian Trail, the Mountain Lake Lodge has been in business since before the Civil War and has welcomed guests since the 1930s. A wide-ranging renovation completed in 2013 revamped much of the property and added a number of outdoor recreational offerings.

Movie buffs will recognize the sandstone face of the Mountain Lake Lodge as the resort featured in the film "Dirty Dancing," but in recent years, the Lodge has reinvented itself as an outdoor adventure destination. With 22 miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, rafting and kayaking on the New River or exploring the treetops in a zip-line aerial adventure, there's lots for guests to explore. The property recently introduced the sky slide, a five-story inflatable water slide. Note that a number of activities require additional fees, but complimentary activities include disc golf, lawn chess, tennis, shuffleboard, bocce and use of the outdoor pool and hot tub.

Rooms offer king, queen or twin beds. North Side rooms feature views of the property's expansive front lawn, and Suites add a sitting area and jetted bathtub. It's worth mentioning that because the lodge is meant to be a true getaway and an older property, rooms do not include televisions or air conditioners (fans are included in all rooms). However, between exploring the outdoors, dining at Harvest, the farm-to-table restaurant, and chatting around the fireplace in the lobby or over drinks at the Stony Creek Tavern, you should be able to get along without it.

The grounds were beautiful. We loved the hills and the trails and the activities.

The accommodations were ok - very dated.. The carpeting and bathroom fixtures were very old. The bath was gross - the shower curtains had black mold, and the safety grab bar took up most of the room. It was hard taking a shower without either bumping the bar or touching the nasty shower curtain. One of the activities wasn't open - however, Adam the activities manager, allowed us to do another activity in it's place since we'd already paid. The staff was super nice. None of us liked the breakfast buffet and on Sunday when they did the brunch, the whole place reeked of fish. Not having AC was not a problem - the only concern was with the windows open every noise was incredibly loud because it was so quiet otherwise.

Location. Stayed 3 days in the main lodge. Nice hiking trails...Bald Knob is a must see. Food was an issue though...see below.

Had a nice stay but food was an issue...especially for a family of four on a budget. We highly recommend taking food with you and a cooler if you stay in the lodge. Otherwise your only option is the onsite restaurant which isn't cheap, and the "Cafe" which has ice cream and some snacks is only open until 6 pm. We tried the restaurant the first night there...sat down and all the water glasses were dirty (food particles and lipstick...like they has not even been washed at all). We left and drove the 30-40 min drive to Blacksburg. If they are going to charge $15 to $20/plate you would expect clean dishes. We stopped at Kroger in Blacksburg and stocked up on snacks and lunch food. We drove to Blacksburg again the next 2 nights for dinner. Our last morning we did try the restaurant again for breakfast only to be served with dirty glasses again....this time we stayed and asked for clean ones. The food was good...still expensive though at $15 for the breakfast buffet.

Wonderful location with a great history. Accommodations were very comfortable, food was great and the staff was friendly and helpful. There are a lot of activities to do on the property. Lots of hiking trails of various difficulty levels. The zipline and ropes course was challenging. Dirty Dancing fans can get a great self guided tour of the different locations used during the filming of the movie. The lake has dried up and the lake bed is now a mountain meadow.

There are lots of activities in the general area but nothing is close. Be prepared to drive. The lodge does not have air conditioning but there is a difference of ten to fifteen degrees from where Pembroke, VA is to where the lodge property is. The ceiling fan in the room makes a difference and the box fan in the window will help pull in cooler mountain night air while sleeping.
