"A charmer in lovely Little Venice," says Lonely Planet, The Colonnade is a cozy, Victorian hotel in a leafy neighborhood. This is where Sigmund Freud lived after he first emigrated from Vienna in the 1940s, and, despite the hotel’s grand townhouse décor, it still feels like a comfortable home-away-from-home.

Known for its picturesque canals, London’s Little Venice is a "tranquil pocket" (Time Out) to the north of Hyde Park. It's an easy walk from the world-famous Lord’s Cricket Ground, with the London Zoo and the open-air theater in Regent's Park just a few minutes farther. Notting Hill and Portobello Road Market are half an hour away on foot, and the hotel makes a peaceful sanctuary after a day of exploring London's best shops and markets. Warwick Avenue tube station (on the Bakerloo line) is just around the corner, providing easy access to Bond Street and the West End in 20 minutes.

The hotel has a small restaurant for breakfast and traditional British fare, like bangers and mash and fish and chips. Meals are served from 7am until 10pm, and afternoon tea is also available. In the evening, guests are received in the elegant lounge, where there’s a classic Wedgwood fireplace and you can mingle over a glass of vintage port.

Each room has been individually designed and features sumptuous fabrics and Victorian-era antiques. Duplex suites on the lower floor have soaring ceilings and four-poster beds, but you may hear occasional rumbles from passing Underground trains. An original turn-of-the-century elevator delivers guests to the upper floors, where rooms have views over the residential rooftops and leafy trees. Black-out curtains ensure a peaceful night’s sleep, and free bottled water is provided in every room.

Room extremely small as was the bathroom (tiny) and neither were particularly clean. Afternoon tea contained Brown jam that tested of burn (they said it was homemade) and breakfast _fruit or yoghurt but can't have both! Very limited. We were not offered upgrade or late checkout

The historic building is beautiful. The staff are very helpful and immediately resolved the problem of the smell of drains in our room by moving us to the only other room available, which was lovely. The location was perfect for us and it was very quiet overnight. The service is very good.
Other Comments
The breakfast is continental and requires guests to order what is required from one of the two waiters. Resulting in you being provided with what you are given rather than what you might choose, e.g. yoghurt flavour, the amount of toast - more than I would have wanted. A basketful of Danish pastries - very nice but more than I would have chosen myself. The jams offered were miniature pots, 5 out of 6 were honey, the sixth a red/black jam of indeterminate flavour. Most of the pots were not sealed and had had their labels removed, suggesting that the pots are refilled, but no idea why? The room was an upgrade but was very dark and cold, a member of staff was unable to change the setting and explained the porter was currently on sick leave. After coming back to the hotel in the evening the room smelt of "drains" and a request was made to change rooms, which was immediately managed to our satisfaction, but I suspect the foul smell could have been a long standing problem.
