This grand 19th-century hotel – one of the ten best in Switzerland, according to the SonntagsZeitung newspaper – makes an impressive base for exploring the traditional Swiss Alpine resort of Pontresina, with its gorgeous surrounds of lakes, forests and mountains.
The hotel consists of an original Victorian-era building and a modern extension. Most rooms and suites have views of the Roseg Glacier, the awesome Bernina and Segantini mountain ranges or the hotel’s sweeping parkland. Free minibars are restocked daily.
The hotel’s spaciousness and facilities such as the Play Paradise centre make it especially suited to families (meaning singles and couples seeking quiet may look elsewhere at the busiest times).
The fifth generation of the Saratz family have spent 50 million Swiss francs renovating the hotel but have left enchanting period details. One of these is the elegant, 140-year-old Art-Nouveau dining room, where you might find traditional Engadine dishes with a French touch, such as turbot fillet filled with Parma ham and Edelweiss Champagne sauce. Try to stay over on a Thursday, when there’s live blues or jazz plays at the hotel’s rustic Pitschna Scena bar.
Although St Moritz is barely a yodel’s echo away, Pontresina feels far more authentic. Shopping and horse-drawn-carriage rides await within the resort itself. Beyond, there are ski runs and walking trails through larch forests to traditional villages. Or you could take a day trip to Italy, less than an hour away by car.
