Overview

The Bridge Street Townhouse hotel is set in an 18th-century Georgian townhouse and its more modern annexe building, in the centre of Chester, within the ancient Roman city walls. A walking tour of the walls themselves, which are the most complete example of their kind in Britain, offers a unique perspective of the city.

There are plenty of places to eat and drink near the hotel, including the historic Bear and Billet pub, which was built in 1664 and is considered one of Chester's finest timber-framed buildings. From the hotel, it's just a short walk to the unique two-tier covered walkways of the Rows, with their boutiques, bars and restaurants.

With its comfortable sofas and armchairs, the hotel's own lounge bar offers a relaxed environment and a selection of wines, beers and ciders. At breakfast, there's freshly brewed coffee, juice and a choice of teas. The continental buffet breakfast selection includes pastries, cereals, cured meats and cheeses.

The hotel has a small private gym for guests' use -- facilities include weights, an exercise bike, a treadmill and a rowing machine.

The contemporary rooms, which have deep mattresses, crisp white linen and a colour scheme of greys and bold red, are either located in the townhouse itself or in the annexe. Superior rooms have Nespresso machines. There's also a two-bedroom apartment with its own entrance, a kitchen and a comfortable lounge.

Other Comments: Quite a small room, at the front of the hotel and on a very busy road, housekeeping did not make the bed and for an old property there were not many period features.
