Overview

Burn How Garden House Hotel is a Victorian property a short stroll from Lake Windermere and a 5-minute walk from the village of Bowness-on-Windermere, where you'll find "trinket shops, cafés, ice-cream stalls and lakeside seats" (Rough Guides).

The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, where you can learn about the author's life and meet some of her favourite characters, including Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck, is a 5-minute walk away.

The hotel has print outs for the Post Knott walk, which starts five minutes' walk from the property. This National Trust walk, a mile and a half in length, is a short but steep climb that gives you spectacular views of Windermere. You can buy other local walking maps and books at the hotel, and there is storage for bicycles.

Bowness Bay -- the starting point for several lake cruises -- and Bowness Bay Marina Windermere Boat Hire are less than a 10-minute walk away.

Sizergh Castle and Garden, a National Trust stately home and garden in Helsington, is a 20-minute drive away.

The hotel's Burn How Restaurant serves regional produce, including Grizedale Forest venison and Lune Valley lamb.

There are 28 bedrooms in total. The ground-floor Rose Garden Rooms are behind the main reception building and have a patio leading out to the rose garden terrace. Lodge Rooms are set over three floors in a detached Victorian residence, opposite the main reception building.

Very pleasant location, friendly staff and good food. Room was comfortable but a bit dated although the bathroom had been modernised.

The Restaurant offer was confusing - a separate menu appeared to cover the Travel Zoo deal but we were charged extra for desserts the price of which was not shown on the menu. This was not made clear on the menu or explained by staff.

Excellent! There was a mix up with the room, which Travelzoo states would have a view of the garden. This wasn't the case so we mentioned this to the staff, who immediately arranged for us to change to another room, which was perfect. Staff moved our luggage for us, and couldn't have been more helpful. Dinner and breakfasts are amazing, the chef is extremely talented and the food delicious. The whole experience was perfect and we will definitely return!

The room was lovely, very spacious with it's own balcony and very clean. My only personal problem was that the beds were far too hard so didn't sleep very well. They did provide a duvet to sleep on the second night which helped a little. The breakfast choice was the best I've ever seen and was excellent. Everything including the service was perfect. Please see below for the evening meal experience though.

There was a problem on the first night when we went for our evening meal. The deal we booked included quite clearly £30.50 per person toward the a la carte menu with a link to the menu. The reason we'd booked the deal as table d'hote menus are often not that good. They gave us a very limited alternative menu with no prices, and said to chose 2 courses. We had to tell them that this wasn't the deal we'd booked. They said we could have what we wanted but would have to pay extra! After much deliberation, and them telephoning the owner, they did eventually agree to let us have it but saying that Travel Zoo had made the mistake! I think that even agreeing to this they didn't give us the proper starter we wanted, king prawns priced at £11.50, we got 4 king prawns in a small pot! I find it difficult to believe that this is what they normally serve for that price! This does spoil things a little, and it's embarrassing to have to argue your case in the dining room. There was another couple there too who were given the same menu and they too had to argue their case. It would be interesting to know whose mistake it actually was.
