When the Duchess of York, Al Capone and F. Scott Fitzgerald made trips to Louisville, they stayed at the Seelbach Hilton Hotel. Opened more than a century ago, the registered landmark has dazzled for generations -- it was impressive enough to persuade Fitzgerald to set Tom and Daisy Buchanan's wedding here in The Great Gatsby.

The Seelbach is home to Kentucky’s only AAA 5-Diamond restaurant, The Oakroom, which itself has a century of history serving rich regionally inspired cuisine in a Golden Era oak-paneled room beneath brass chandeliers. A table in one nook was a favorite for when Capone came to play cards, and is located near secret tunnels should the gangster have needed to escape. The state’s liquor of choice is poured in the Old Seelbach Bar, where cocktails incorporate single-barrel bourbon and Kentucky limestone water.

When a wedding hasn’t already booked the space, ask hotel staff for a tour of the Rathskeller. This subterranean ballroom is completely covered in custom Rookwood pottery. The ceiling curves up to gothic arches, and walls have medieval-style tiles and coats of arms.

Guest rooms marry historical accents like paneled wood doors with modern amenities such as HD TVs and Wi-Fi. The Concierge Lounge serves nightly hors d’oeuvres and has a discounted honor bar.
