Definitely one of the Victorian era's most imposing buildings, The Headland is a red-brick pile perched above Newquay’s Fistral Beach. Inside, the 4-star hotel & spa offers good food, and a warm welcome for families and dogs.

Newquay is best known for surfing, but there's plenty to do if you don't feel like hurling yourself at the waves. The South West Coast Path runs past the hotel and there's a 9-hole golf course on site, or you can head into Newquay to the zoo or the Blue Reef Aquarium. Fancy a drive? Both the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are around 40 minutes away.

The Headland's main restaurant features fine-dining dishes made using local produce -- look for local mackerel sashimi and Cornish feather blade of beef bourguignon. The Terrace is more informal -- think burgers, fish and chips, and sandwiches. Both eateries offer a children's menu. If you've overindulged, hit the gym or head for the pool -- guests have access to the spa (5-Bubble rated by The Good Spa Guide), although swimming times for children are restricted and charges apply for treatments. Alternatively, visit the tennis courts or croquet lawn.

Rooms are colourful and cheerful, and all offer DVD players -- a full English breakfast is also included in the rate. Travellers on more of a budget can opt for a courtyard room, although it seems a shame to miss out on the ocean or beach views available elsewhere.
