Away from the crowd-packed beaches that line Tenerife's south coast, this charming 20-room hotel is located in the sleepy village of Garachico on the island's northwest coast.
Garachico's pretty cobbled centre is home to a beautifully restored church and seawater swimming pools carved from volcanic rock. Further west, Buenavista sits in the foothills of the Teno mountains, where there are palm groves and banana plantations. Golfers can tee off at the Seve Ballesteros-designed Buenavista Gold Course. Nearby Punta de Tena is a rugged stretch of coastline with an iconic lighthouse.
The characterful hotel occupies an 18th-century mansion, and is decorated with contemporary Spanish art and terra-cotta walls. The pool is hewn from volcanic lava and is located in an atmospheric courtyard. Dine on modern Canarian cuisine at the restaurant and grab a drink with a view up on the rooftop terrace. The small bar is stocked with board games for rainy days (this area of Tenerife has a cooler climate than the south).
All 20 rooms are individually designed and have a unique layout with chairs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and brightly coloured walls. All rooms have a Jacuzzi bathtub.
