Comprising two boldly renovated Victorian homes, Gilded is a boutique Newport hotel with "the right balance between old-fashioned charm and modern comfort" (The New York Times). A playful escape from the city's Old World mansions and nautical culture, Gilded pays homage to its opulent namesake era with decadent interiors of rich jewel tones, gold accents and lacquered surfaces.

Equally daring in decor, guest rooms transport guests to the Golden Age without sacrificing the conveniences of the modern traveler. Custom-made padded headboards, ornate light fixtures and vivid wallpaper and artwork are complemented with all the necessities: Wi-Fi, an LED smart TV, iPad with location information and—perhaps, the most essential—wine glasses and a cork screw.

While there are no on-site restaurants, Gilded serves a complimentary daily breakfast of curated small plates with flavors that are anything but. In addition to fresh fruit and juices, tea and coffee, the ever-changing menu has offered arugula, goat cheese and prosciutto breakfast pizza, open-faced pulled pork egg sandwiches and Caprese baked eggs.

Guests can take advantage of the billiards room, complete with a black velvet and white lacquer pool table, or relax in the private courtyard with a croquet practice court. In the late afternoon, bring your favorite spirits to "G and Tea," where the hotel supplies mixers and modifiers inspired from the Gilded Age.

Incredibly soft sheets!

Trying too hard to be quirky, when really it's just another old house with a slap-dash veneer of renovation and HomeGoods-style "decor." It looks like it's trying hard to be a member of the Kimpton Hotel chain. The windows are not tight--mine couldn't even close and in the single-digit weather during my visit, this meant that the hotel was heating the great outdoors.

We were on the first floor of Gilded. As an older person, I would not like to have to climb the stairs to a higher room. We have had to do that in past B and B's and it is unpleasant. However, I know if you mentioned that you have trouble with stairs, the Gilded staff would could come to your aird.

The historic house made into a gaudy, fun, irreverent hotel. The small plate breakfast and evening choices were imaginative and beyond gourmet, they were ultra -gourmet.

It would be helpful if even a small chair was available in the double bed rooms. Otherwise there is no place to sit except on the bed.

I liked the inn and the staff a lot. But feel compelled to note: if you want to spend time around the Thames end of town then be prepared to walk-a lot! We enjoyed spending time on the Broadway end which is a walk but not quite as far.
